The Seattle Mariners celebrate after hitting a walk-off single during the eleventh inning to win the game against the Houston Astros.

On December 22nd, 2025, the Seattle Mariners added to their roster with the signing of Rob Refsnyder in free agency. In the process, the team hit capacity on their 40-man roster, but continue to make moves in the offseason.

While it was initially revealed that the one-year contract of $6.25 million included up to $250,000 in incentives, more details have recently come to light. Showing just how valuable Refsnyder really is to the Pacific Northwest.

Rob Refsnyder’s Contract

Refsnyder’s one-year deal for the 2026 season includes a variety of incentives tied to performance and achievements. Having never earned more than $2.1 million in a single season, Refsnyder’s contract with Seattle represents a financial high in his MLB career.

According to The Associated Press, Refsndyer will receive performance bonuses tied to plate appearances. He will earn $50,000 at each of the following thresholds: 150, 200, 250, 300, and 350 plate appearances.

Award incentives are structured as follows:

  • $150,000 for winning the American League MVP

  • $100,000 for World Series MVP

  • $50,000 for other major honors, including Gold Glove, Silver Slugger, or League Championship Series MVP

An All-Star selection would earn Refsnyder an extra $25,000, with an additional $50,000 awarded if his team wins the All-Star Game.

By backing the contract with these incentives, the Mariners are making a clear statement about their direction. It’s a move that reflects confidence in both the roster and the future they’re trying to build.

A Special Message from Rob Refsnyder

Red Sox Reporter, Gabrielle Starr, shared a special message to both teams from Rob Refsnyder via her X platform following the contract signing:

Thank you to the incredible fans of Boston. It was such a joy to wear that uniform and compete for both you and the city. Watching my kids grow up and play at Fenway, both before and after work, will be some of my fondest memories. We met so many hardworking, amazing people who made this city such a special place for my family over the past four years. A big thank you to the coaching staff, medical team, clubhouse staff, and everyone in the organization who has helped me along the way. And lastly, thank you to my Sox teammates for putting up with me. I’ve learned so much from all of you.

Seattle, I don’t think my younger self would have believed you if you had told him he’d someday be able to play for such an amazing organization. I used to play N64 MLB Baseball, featuring Griffey, for hours, pretending I was on the team. I feel so grateful, humbled, and fortunate for this moment. I’ll give you everything I’ve got. See you in Peoria.

Who is Rob Refsnyder

At 34, Refsnyder joins the Mariners following a productive 2025 with the Boston Red Sox, where he spent the past four seasons.

Last year, Refsnyder appeared in 70 games and delivered solid offensive production. He finished with a .269 batting average, a .354 on-base percentage, and an .838 OPS. He totaled nine home runs, 12 doubles, 30 RBIs, and three stolen bases, contributing 1.2 fWAR despite a limited role.

Refsnyder’s greatest strength is his ability to punish left-handed pitchers. Last season, he hit .302 against them, pairing that average with a .399 on-base percentage and a .560 slugging percentage. That skill set makes him a valuable platoon option for Seattle.

For a team looking to win their first World Series, Rob Refsnyder is the kind of addition who can make a difference where Seattle needs it most.
