The 2026 Daytona 500 TV ratings delivered a measurable bump for NASCAR and FOX. Sunday’s broadcast averaged 7.489 million viewers, an 11 percent increase from 2025.
A Late-Race Spike Pushed It Over Nine Million
As the field tightened in the final laps, so did the audience.
The broadcast peaked at 9.154 million viewers between 5:30 and 5:45 p.m. ET, as Tyler Reddick battled to secure his first Daytona 500 victory for 23XI Racing, co-owned by Michael Jordan and Denny Hamlin.
Daytona traditionally sees its strongest viewership late, when casual fans tune in for both the “Big One” and the checkered flag. Clearing nine million at peak underscores that the event still commands broad attention when it reaches its climax.
Strongest Showing In Three Years
It marked the highest Daytona 500 audience since 2023, when the race averaged 8.173 million viewers.
Last year’s season opener was impacted by rain interruptions that disrupted the broadcast window. This year, NASCAR, keen to avoid delays, moved up the start time by an hour due to weather concerns, and the race itself ran to completion before rain arrived later in the evening.
A more stable broadcast window likely helped retain viewers throughout the afternoon.
Beating the Competition
Unlike the previous three years, “The Great American Race” aired during a period that overlapped with Winter Olympics coverage. Historically, that kind of special-events programming competition can compress sports ratings.
In 2026, it did not. According to FOX, the race led all broadcast and cable networks during its time slot. That distinction matters in a fragmented media environment where live sports are one of the few consistent audience drivers.
Why It Matters
The Daytona 500 is more the start of a 36-race season. It’s the sport’s largest national stage.
Strong ratings help set the tone for the NASCAR Cup Series year. They reinforce sponsor value. They strengthen the network’s investment in the product. And they provide an early signal of fan engagement.
On track, Reddick delivered 23XI Racing its first Daytona 500 trophy. Off track, the sport opened 2026 with its strongest audience in several years.
In NASCAR, momentum shows up on the track and on the ratings sheet. In 2026, both moved in the right direction.
Next up, all three NASCAR Series head to Atlanta this weekend for the EchoPark Speedway events.
