Connor Zilisch made his NASCAR Cup Series debut in the 2026 Clash at Bowman Gray Stadium, handling one of the most challenging race environments of the weekend.

The 19-year-old Trackhouse Racing driver piloted the No. 88 Red Bull Chevrolet and finished 18th after starting from a challenging position in a race shaped by weather delays and frequent cautions. Rain, sleet, and changing track grip forced drivers to stay alert throughout the 200-lap exhibition.

Connor Zilisch Reaches Main Event Despite Difficult Setup

Zilisch first pointed to making the race an essential step for his team.

“I mean, first of all, we made the show, which was good for the group we were in and the circumstances we had,” Zilisch said. “Props to Trackhouse for getting all three cars in and working hard this offseason to make sure we kicked the season off on the right foot.”

He said the organization brought speed to the track.

“Today was solid. All three cars were fast, and we had a lot of hope, but it was just a chaotic race. I got hit a lot, hit some people too, guilty of that, but it was fun to race. I’m glad NASCAR let us go out there and figure it out.”

While the result placed him outside the top group, Zilisch noted the value of track position during the race.

“Overall, it was a good day. Wish I could have run better at the end, but it was good to be up front for at least a little bit of it.”

Rookie Describes Unusual Race Flow

The Clash featured a record 17 caution flags and multiple restarts as weather affected the racing surface. For Connor Zilisch, the event’s structure stood out right away.

“I don’t think I’ve ever experienced a race like this where caution laps didn’t count. It felt like the entirety of the race under caution took forever,” he said. “I’ve been in wild races, but this certainly was up there.”

The repeated slow periods limited long green flag runs and forced drivers to reset their approach after each restart. Managing tire temperature and grip became critical as conditions shifted.

Zilisch relied on his prior racing background to stay composed, focusing on clean laps and avoiding larger incidents that affected several competitors.

Changing Track Surface Created New Challenges

As the rain eased, the track began to dry in sections, leaving drivers to search for the safest lane.

“When we went back racing, and it was still raining, it started to really get messy,” Zilisch said. “When the track started to dry, and there was one lane that was dry, and everyone was fighting to be in that one lane, that’s when it got messy.”

Grip levels varied across the surface, especially in patched areas.

“I don’t think people were surprised by the lack of grip. There were patches on the track. When they put the Rhino patches down, those have no grip, and not a lot of people saw them,” Zilisch said. “A lot of people were missing the bottom and making errors.”

Even with the weather, he believed the track allowed competition once conditions improved.

“I think the track was very raceable as soon as you could get on it,” he said. “Obviously, when it’s torrential, we can’t race. But with what we had, we made the most of it, and I’m glad we got back out there.”

The race was won by Ryan Preece, who led 46 laps and finished 1.752 seconds ahead of William Byron, with Ryan Blaney placing third. Zilisch’s debut now shifts attention toward the regular season opener at Daytona, where he is set to continue his first full year at the Cup level.
