JR Motorsports opened its 2026 NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series season with a strong run at Daytona International Speedway. The team did not win the race, but it placed all four cars inside the top 10 and earned important early points.

Austin Hill led 78 laps and held off Justin Allgaier late to win for Richard Childress Racing. Still, the main takeaway for JR Motorsports was its overall consistency.

Justin Allgaier finished second, Sammy Smith took fifth, Carson Kvapil finished seventh, and rookie Rajah Caruth came home tenth.

After the race, co-owner Dale Earnhardt Jr. said the results showed solid execution across the organization and highlighted how consistency matters under NASCAR’s current points system at the start of a long season.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. pleased with full-team top-10 result

Earnhardt Jr. said the organization valued the across-the-board finish, even without a win. He stressed that stage points and strong finishes remain important in the championship format.

“I’m pretty happy. We came out of here with all our cars in the top 10 and picked up some stage points. Obviously, we’re trying to win the race, but if you can’t win, with the way the point system works, you’ve got to be satisfied with a day like today.”

“We had some cars that got damaged and were in some wrecks, but we still managed to finish in a good spot.”

The performance ensured that all four teams left Daytona with points and a stable start to the season.

Young drivers show progress at superspeedway

Earnhardt Jr. also pointed to the growth of the team’s younger drivers. Late in Stage Two, all four JR Motorsports entries ran in a line together, showing coordination and speed in the draft.

He highlighted Rajah Caruth and Carson Kvapil, while also noting Sammy Smith’s work to improve.

“I was really happy. Rajah Caruth looked great and did some things I was pleased to see,” Earnhardt Jr. said. “Carson looked like he learned a lot. Sammy’s been studying and working really hard to get better, and I’m seeing good things from him at this place, and at Talladega as well.”

He said the improvement on drafting tracks reflects steady development by the group.

“So overall, I’m pretty happy. There’s been a lot of progress in their abilities at these types of racetracks.”

Austin Hill and RCR still control key moments at Daytona

Despite the strong showing, JR Motorsports still had to chase Austin Hill and the Richard Childress Racing group for the win. Hill controlled much of the race and managed the closing laps to secure another Daytona victory.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. acknowledged the strength of Hill and the RCR program at superspeedways.

“It looks tough. You’ve got a lot of experience behind the wheel with Austin. He knows exactly how to handle that car and where to put it, and they’re giving him one of the best cars in the field, if not the best.”

He added that JR Motorsports has improved and continues to narrow the gap.

“We’ve caught up a little bit. We’ve got a bit more power, we’re improving, and we’re getting closer. But he’s extremely talented, so you’ve got to give him a lot of credit.”

JR Motorsports leaves Daytona without a win but with strong finishes, early points, and evidence that all four teams can compete near the front as the season moves forward.
