On February 20, 2026, Gaston County Fire Services confirmed that investigators have finished examining the deadly blaze at the Hamlin family home in Stanley, North Carolina.
The update was reported by NASCAR journalist Bob Pockrass. Officials ruled the fire accidental after reviewing the scene and available evidence. However, they could not determine the exact ignition source or what first caught fire due to the severe damage inside the house.

The fire broke out on December 28, 2025, causing significant property damage. Authorities reported about $776,000 in damage, and the two-story home was declared a total loss. The case closure marks the official end of the investigation, which followed weeks of review and inspection by local fire officials.
Firefighters Battled Flames for Nearly Two Hours
Around 6 p.m., emergency crews were called to the home on the 1100 block of Blacksnake Road. The home was already burning throughout when crews reached the scene. The property was owned by a company linked to Denny Hamlin and his father.
Multiple agencies assisted in the response, including the Lucia-Riverbend Volunteer Fire Department. Crews faced challenges because there were no nearby hydrants. Tanker trucks delivered water to the scene, slowing firefighting efforts. It took nearly two hours for crews to bring the blaze under control.
Investigators later said the structure had suffered extensive collapse, making it difficult to identify where the fire started. Because of that damage, officials listed the fire as accidental but marked the origin and heat source as undetermined.
Dennis Hamlin Died, while Mary Lou Hamlin Survived with Injuries
Dennis Hamlin, 75, and his wife, Mary Lou Hamlin, 69, were the only people inside the house at the time. Both escaped the burning home, but each suffered serious injuries.
Dennis Hamlin died shortly after reaching a local hospital. Officials confirmed that smoke inhalation caused his death. Mary Lou Hamlin suffered critical burns and required extended medical treatment. Recent updates state she is stable and continues rehabilitation as she recovers.
In early January 2026, Denny Hamlin shared a heartfelt message on social media. “Thank you to everyone who has reached out with condolences on my father’s passing. My mother continues to improve, and our family truly appreciates the outpouring of support and the respect for our privacy during this time.”
Hamlin has often credited his father for introducing him to racing through go-karts when he was young. Dennis played a major role in helping build his son’s early interest in motorsports.
Denny Hamlin, 45, competes full-time in the NASCAR Cup Series for Joe Gibbs Racing and co-owns 23XI Racing. He has earned 60 Cup Series wins, including three Daytona 500 victories in 2016, 2019, and 2020.
The investigation’s conclusion formally closes the incident from a legal and safety standpoint, ending months of review by Gaston County fire authorities.
