Denny Hamlin has given Joe Gibbs Racing a clear signal about his future. With the 2027 NASCAR Cup Series season now expected to be his last. The 45-year-old driver shared his plans in a recent interview as he continues to compete at a high level in 2026.
Denny Hamlin signed a contract extension last year that runs through the end of 2027, and both sides have already started preparing for what comes next.
His comments come as he gains early momentum this season, including a recent win at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The remarks were shared by motorsport journalist Matt Weaver on social media. While he outlined a likely timeline, he also made it clear that racing careers can change quickly.
Denny Hamlin Outlines 2027 as Likely Final Season
Hamlin said he has already informed Joe Gibbs Racing about his expected timeline. He explained that the team is planning ahead based on his current outlook, with the comments shared by Matt Weaver.
“I’ve given Gibbs enough of a heads up that they are working on the plans for beyond, so as long as those go as planned, I still assume the end of ’27 is it,” Hamlin said.
He added that he wants to approach his final season in the right way and avoid losing motivation late in his career.
“I don’t want to go my last year, half a year, just wanting to get out. If I can have a final year that starts like this, I’m good.”
Hamlin also left open the possibility that plans could change.
“Well, I mean, things always change. You just never know, but it’s what I would like. Again, I don’t know all the moving parts and pieces beyond what happens between now and about 20 months from now. So, you just don’t know, but I thought that was a good enough timeline and enough heads up that they could make plans.”
Strong 2026 Start Supports Long-Term Plan
Hamlin’s comments come as he continues to perform at a high level. He secured a win at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, marking his first victory of the 2026 season and the 61st of his career.
The result moved him to 10th on NASCAR’s all-time wins list, passing Kevin Harvick. During that race, he led 134 laps despite an early speeding penalty, demonstrating he remains competitive at the front.
His current contract with Joe Gibbs Racing runs through the 2027 season. When the deal was announced, it was widely viewed as a final contract, and Hamlin’s recent comments support that view.
Joe Gibbs Racing Prepares for Future Without Hamlin
Hamlin said giving early notice allows the team to prepare for a transition. Joe Gibbs Racing now has time to consider its options for the No. 11 car beyond 2027.
He has often spoken about wanting to leave the sport while still performing at a high level. His focus remains on competing and making the most of the seasons ahead.
Despite outlining a possible end date, Hamlin’s future is not fully set. He continues to race at a competitive level, and his recent performance shows he can still win races.
For now, Hamlin remains focused on the 2026 season and building on his early success while plans for the future continue to take shape.
