Frankie Muniz isn’t easing back into Hollywood. He’s doing it while living one of the most demanding schedules in motorsports.
The former “Malcolm in the Middle” star revealed just how intense life has become as he balances a full-time NASCAR Truck Series season with filming the highly anticipated reboot of the hit show. And by his own description, it’s a routine that leaves almost no room to breathe.
Muniz told Entertainment Weekly the process has been “exhausting,” a word that only begins to capture what his weekly schedule actually looks like.
A Weekly Routine That Leaves No Margin for Error
Muniz is not splitting time casually between two careers. He is fully committed to both.
With filming taking place in Vancouver, Canada, his week is dictated by constant travel and strict timing tied to NASCAR’s race calendar.
“I would film Sunday through Wednesday, fly Thursday, race Friday, and fly back Saturday,” Muniz said.
That turnaround leaves almost no margin for delays, rest, or recovery. NASCAR Truck Series weekends alone demand full focus, from practice sessions to qualifying and race execution. Layer a full television production schedule on top, and the margin for error disappears entirely.
Still, Muniz made it clear he has no interest in complaining about the opportunity.
“It was exhausting, but I also know how cool it is to have the opportunity to get to do this again, so I wasn’t going to complain at all. I am so thankful to everybody on the production for working around my NASCAR schedule.”
Not a Hobby, Not a Cameo — Two Full-Time Commitments
What makes Muniz’s situation unique is that neither side of his schedule is part-time.
On one side, he is competing in NASCAR’s national ranks, where preparation, travel, and performance are constant demands. Drivers are expected to be at the track early, often by Friday, and remain locked in through race completion.
On the other, he is stepping back into one of the most recognizable roles of his career, with a reboot that carries both fan expectations and production pressure.
Muniz acknowledged just how rare that balance is, even comparing the experience to other major television productions.

The show’s creator Linwood Boomer revealed that coordinating around Muniz’s racing schedule proved to be one of the most challenging elements of production — even more complex than working with Bryan Cranston during “Breaking Bad.”
That comparison underscores the scale of the logistical challenge. Muniz is not simply fitting in appearances. He is building his schedule around two industries that rarely slow down.
The Physical Toll Behind the Scenes
The grind is not just about time. It is also physical.
Muniz is coming off a year that included a significant injury setback, one that forced him to step away from racing for six weeks after suffering a distal radius fracture.
That absence came during his rookie Truck Series season, interrupting what was already a demanding transition into NASCAR’s national spotlight.
Even outside of injury, the reality of the lifestyle is far from glamorous.
“You can spend your life around Hollywood and motor racing, but it’s never all glamour,” Muniz said, describing the behind-the-scenes demands that come with both careers.
That reality includes constant flights, long days at the track, and the pressure to perform in two entirely different arenas.
A Rare Career Balancing Act
Few athletes or entertainers operate at this level across two industries at once. Muniz is not just returning to television while staying involved in racing. He is attempting to compete and perform at a high level in both simultaneously.
That balancing act is what makes his current run so compelling.
It is not nostalgia. It is not a cameo comeback. It is a full-scale return to Hollywood happening in real time alongside a NASCAR career that continues to demand more each week.
And if Muniz’s own words are any indication, the schedule may be exhausting — but it is also exactly where he wants to be.
