An ongoing legal dispute between Joe Gibbs Racing and Spire Motorsports escalated further this week, as both organizations issued new statements tied to a lawsuit involving a former employee and the alleged handling of sensitive team information.

The latest development came after a statement from JGR, shared via reporter Jeff Gluck, in which the organization outlined its position on the lawsuit and emphasized its intent to protect proprietary information. The latest statements come as tensions between the two organizations have continued to rise in recent days, with both sides publicly addressing the dispute.

Joe Gibbs Racing Cites ‘Trade Secrets’ in Statement

In the statement attributed to Heather Gibbs and provided to The Athletic, JGR said its “singular purpose” in the lawsuit is to protect internal information developed over decades.

“In terms of the lawsuit, our singular purpose is to protect our trade secrets — the most important information that our race team (and any race team for that matter) possesses, particularly in this era of Next Gen cars,” the statement read.

JGR further said those trade secrets were “created through the hard work and innovation” of employees over a 35-year period.

JGR’s statement further alleges that:

“Those same trade secrets were admittedly stolen by a former employee in a manner meant to avoid detection.”

The statement went on to reference Spire Motorsports, saying:

“Within days of the acknowledged theft, Spire offered that former employee a job and subsequently hired him.”

JGR emphasized that the lawsuit is not personal, framing it instead as an effort to uphold fairness across the sport.

“We believe accountability matters… to protect the foundation this sport is built on, so that every team, every driver, and every fan can trust in the fairness of the competition.”

Spire Motorsports Responds

Spire Motorsports has publicly pushed back on the allegations.

In comments reported by The Athletic, Spire Motorsports leadership responded to JGR’s claims and characterization of the situation, including a remark that the organization believes the lawsuit is intended to “hurt us.”

The response highlights the divide between the two organizations as the situation continues to unfold publicly.

Context: Dispute Part of Broader Legal Battle

The dispute is part of a broader, ongoing legal battle between the two organizations involving a former JGR employee and the handling of internal team information.

JGR has framed the issue as a matter of protecting proprietary data and maintaining competitive integrity, particularly in the tightly controlled Next Gen car era, where teams operate within narrow technical margins.

Spire, meanwhile, has disputed JGR’s characterization of the situation in its public response.

The claims made by both sides have not been proven in court. Both teams have continued to publicly respond as new details emerge, underscoring the increasingly visible nature of the dispute.

Broader Implications for NASCAR

Public disputes between teams are relatively rare at this level, particularly those involving allegations tied to internal information and competitive practices.

The situation underscores how valuable proprietary data has become in modern NASCAR, where even small competitive advantages can carry significant impact.

For now, the disagreement between JGR and Spire appears far from resolved, with both sides taking firm and very public positions as the legal process moves forward.
