NASCAR’s traditional throwback weekend at Darlington Raceway could look a little different during the next NASCAR race at the historic track. NASCAR reporter Bob Pockrass and Hall of Famer Dale Earnhardt Jr. recently clarified why the sport is shifting its approach while still keeping the tradition alive.

The conversation began when a fan asked Bob Pockrass a direct question on social media about the upcoming NASCAR race at Darlington Raceway.

“@bobpockrass How many teams will do a throwback scheme in Darlington?”

The question sparked a wider discussion about whether the throwback concept is fading or simply evolving as Darlington Raceway prepares for another major NASCAR race weekend.

Bob Pockrass Explains NASCAR Darlington Raceway Direction

Bob Pockrass responded with a clear explanation about how the organization is approaching the Darlington Raceway weekend this season.

“They are not encouraging throwback schemes for Darlington this year. There will still be former drivers coming to the race, and the hope is to celebrate them.”

Pockrass also explained why the Cup Series organization may be shifting its focus during the Darlington Raceway NASCAR race weekend.

“I’d say there was a feeling the throwbacks had run their course and just tough to keep doing ones that worked.”

The NASCAR throwback concept started in 2015 at Darlington Raceway. Teams quickly embraced the idea, creating retro paint schemes inspired by historic NASCAR cars.

For several seasons, the Darlington Raceway race became one of the most visually unique events on the schedule. Fans regularly saw tributes to famous drivers and classic paint schemes from earlier NASCAR eras.

But after nearly a decade, teams found it harder to create new throwback designs that still felt meaningful.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. Clarifies Throwback Schemes Are Still Allowed

After Bob Pockrass shared the update, Dale Earnhardt Jr. joined the conversation to provide more context about the Darlington Raceway NASCAR race weekend.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. agreed with Pockrass but made it clear that NASCAR has not banned throwback paint schemes.

“As usual Bob is correct but I think it’s fair to say that the industry as a whole can and will at times still do throwback designs around Darlington (you’ll see a handful this year),” Dale Earnhardt Jr. wrote.

Earnhardt Jr. explained that the organization and Darlington Raceway simply want to shift attention during the NASCAR race weekend.

“The track and Nascar decided to shift focus towards a program around the drivers of the past and shine a light on them during Darlington weekend. No one in Nascar ever said no more throwback cars.”

The clarification from Dale Earnhardt Jr. confirmed that teams can still run throwback paint schemes during the Darlington Raceway NASCAR race if they choose.

Darlington Raceway Weekend Still Honors NASCAR History

Darlington Raceway remains one of the most historic tracks. Often called “The Lady in Black,” the venue has hosted some of the most memorable NASCAR races ever held.

Because of that history, the throwback theme became a natural fit when it launched in 2015.

Now the sport’s governing body wants to highlight the drivers behind that history during the Darlington Raceway race weekend.

Former NASCAR drivers are expected to attend the event, allowing fans to celebrate the individuals who helped shape the sport across more than 75 years.

Throwback schemes are still possible for teams looking to capitalize on the historic atmosphere at Darlington Raceway.

As Dale Earnhardt Jr. summarized, teams still have the freedom to run throwback designs while the organization places greater focus on honoring the drivers who built the sport.
