NASCAR has updated its procedures for how teams can prepare pit stalls during race weekends, placing new limits on how NASCAR pit stalls can be cleaned before races.
According to multiple reports, the sanctioning body recently notified crew chiefs that teams are no longer permitted to use chemicals or specialized tools to clean their pit boxes.
Instead, any cleaning of pit stall surfaces must now be done by hand using basic tools, preventing teams from using aggressive cleaning methods that could alter the surface of the pit box.
The change comes as the NASCAR Cup Series heads to Las Vegas Motor Speedway for this weekend’s race.
NASCAR Tightens Pit Stall Preparation Rules
Pit stall preparation has quietly become a strategic part of race weekends.
Teams often clean their pit boxes to remove rubber buildup, dirt or other debris from the concrete surface in order to maximize grip for both the car and the pit crew during stops. Some teams have previously spent excessive time preparing pit stalls in search of even the smallest traction advantage on pit road.
Better traction can help crews control the car during tire changes and can also help drivers accelerate cleanly when leaving the pit box.
Under the updated guidance, however, teams are no longer allowed to use chemical cleaners or tools that could significantly modify the surface of the pit stall.
Cleaning the pit box must now be done using simple hand tools only, according to the update shared with teams.
NASCAR also made clear that teams cannot damage pit road timing loops or the painted markings that define pit stall boundaries while preparing the box.
Pit Stall Prep Has Drawn Increased Attention
The clarification arrives after pit stall preparation drew increased attention across the garage.
In recent seasons, some teams have spent extended time cleaning and preparing their pit boxes in an effort to gain every possible advantage during pit stops.
Because pit stop execution can swing track position in seconds, even small improvements in grip inside the pit box can make a difference.
By limiting how aggressively teams can clean their stalls, NASCAR appears to be aiming to maintain a more consistent pit road surface for all competitors.
Change Arrives As NASCAR Heads to Las Vegas
The update comes just as the Cup Series prepares for race weekend at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
The 1.5-mile intermediate track often produces strategy-heavy races where pit stops and track position can determine the outcome.
With the updated procedures now in place, teams heading into Las Vegas will have fewer options for preparing their pit stalls before the green flag.
