A former NASCAR Cup Series team is facing a lawsuit tied to an alleged $50,000 equipment deal that was never fulfilled, according to a filing in North Carolina.
The complaint, filed in Iredell County Superior Court, alleges that a Mooresville man paid Randy Humphrey Racing for tractor-trailers and related racing equipment but never received the items outlined in the agreement.
According to the lawsuit, the payment was made in February 2024, but the equipment was not delivered.
Lawsuit Alleges Payment Was Made but Equipment Not Delivered
In the filing, the plaintiff alleges he entered into a purchase agreement with Randy Humphrey Racing for transport equipment commonly used by race teams, including tractor-trailers.
The lawsuit alleges the payment was made in full, but the agreed-upon items were never transferred.
The lawsuit further alleges the team later attempted to alter the terms of the agreement without the plaintiff’s approval after payment had already been made.
As a result, the plaintiff is seeking to recover the $50,000 payment, along with any additional damages deemed appropriate by the court.
It is unclear if Randy Humphrey Racing has filed a response. The case remains pending.
Team Had Brief NASCAR Cup Series Run
Randy Humphrey Racing competed in a limited schedule during the 2014 NASCAR Cup Series season, making eight race starts before ceasing competition.
During that stretch, the team fielded multiple drivers, including Joe Nemechek, Corey LaJoie, Nelson Piquet Jr., and Dave Blaney.
The organization’s best result came during the 2014 season with a finish outside the top 25.
Team owner Randy Humphrey also previously had ties within the sport, including involvement as a co-owner of Phil Parsons Racing.
Reflects Challenges Faced by Smaller Teams
Randy Humphrey Racing was one of several smaller teams that competed on a part-time basis during the early 2010s, often operating with limited resources and short-term funding.
Many of those operations struggled to sustain long-term stability, with financial hurdles contributing to brief runs in the Cup Series.
While the team has not competed in NASCAR for more than a decade, the lawsuit brings renewed attention to its business dealings and the challenges that can follow after a team exits the sport.
Case Remains Ongoing
The case is currently active in Iredell County Superior Court. No timeline for resolution has been publicly outlined.
