NASCAR’s return to Rockingham Speedway hasn’t even reached the green flag, and already, a significant portion of the field is dealing with setbacks.

Ahead of race weekend at the historic North Carolina oval, NASCAR penalized roughly one-third of the field following inspection issues — a striking development that adds early tension to one of the sport’s most anticipated stops of the season.

Widespread inspection issues hit before track time

Teams rolled through the inspection line Thursday in preparation for practice and qualifying, but a large number failed to make it through cleanly.

Failing inspection on the first attempt typically does not result in a penalty. However, repeated failures — particularly across consecutive events — can trigger consequences. That’s exactly what unfolded ahead of Rockingham.

After multiple teams failed inspection twice, NASCAR issued penalties that immediately impacted preparation for the weekend.

Among those penalized were Brendan Queen, Justin Haley, Corey LaJoie, Clayton Green, Frankie Muniz, Timmy Hill, Layne Riggs, Kris Wright, Justin Carroll, Caleb Costner, Christian Eckes, Ben Rhodes and Tyler Ankrum.

What the penalties mean for teams

The penalties carry real weight, especially at a track like Rockingham where track time is critical.

NASCAR docked affected teams 10 minutes of practice time — a significant loss during a limited session where drivers work to understand tire wear, balance and long-run performance.

At a surface like Rockingham, known for its abrasive characteristics and heavy tire falloff, every lap matters. Losing practice time can put teams behind before the race even begins.

There is some relief, however. All impacted teams were able to pass inspection on their third attempt, meaning no additional penalties will be assessed.

Rockingham return already delivering storylines

Rockingham Speedway continues to reestablish itself as one of the more compelling venues on the NASCAR schedule.

The 0.94-mile oval is hosting both the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series and NASCAR Xfinity Series this weekend, marking another chapter in the track’s modern return.

And if early signs are any indication, the weekend is already shaping up to be unpredictable.

Last year’s race weekend featured multiple cautions and even a post-race disqualification that altered the final results — a reminder of how quickly things can shift at “The Rock.”

Now, before cars have even taken the green flag, teams are already working to recover from early setbacks.
