Ryan Blaney came out of Saturday night’s race with a mix of emotions, part pride, part frustration. On paper, a fourth-place finish and a stage win sound like a solid night, and it was. But behind the smile, Blaney couldn’t hide how much the endless laps under caution had worn on him.
“It was another one of those things where we thought we knew what the tire was gonna do and it did something completely different,” Ryan Blaney said afterward. “I guess that’s happened multiple times and that makes for an exciting race and trying to figure it out on the fly… It was a wild night. I wish we wouldn’t have run so many laps under caution.”
That sentiment was echoed by many in the garage. What was shaping up to be a fast-paced showdown got bogged down by caution after caution, especially during the middle stretch, where Blaney said “two-thirds of that race was kind of getting pretty boring.”
Even so, the Team Penske driver kept his No. 12 car dialed in, staying near the front and showing off solid speed once the track finally went green again.
Tire Surprises Keep Drivers Guessing
One of the night’s biggest curveballs came from the tires, and not in a good way. Teams had walked into the weekend with certain expectations based on practice sessions, but once the race began, those assumptions went out the window.
“The tires were interesting. No one expected that,” Blaney explained. “It practices one way and then it races a completely different way, so we just tried to manage tires… It makes for an exciting race and trying to figure it out on the fly and what to expect, what to do, and how to strategise.”
That indecision saw crews scurrying about during the middle of the race in an attempt to discover configurations that would remain over a few laps, without any significant degradation.
Some teams failed to match the pace, but the group of Ryan Blaney appeared to be at the right mix, which allowed him to remain in the top five throughout the majority of the evening.
The fact that the No. 12 was able to win a stage was an added advantage, a sign that it was fast despite all the uncertainties surrounding it.
Eyes Forward to New Hampshire Motor Speedway
Despite the stop-and-go rhythm and the head-scratching tire issues, Ryan Blaney left the track feeling confident about the team’s direction.
“We were really fast all night… Overall, I’m really, really proud of the night and the effort,” he said. “It’s nice to win a stage and good to come home fourth… We’ll go to Loudon next week. I’m looking forward to it.”
Heading to Loudon, known formally as New Hampshire Motor Speedway, RyanBlaney will be looking to carry the momentum while hoping for a cleaner, more straightforward race. If the speed he showed this weekend sticks around and the cautions ease up, he could easily be a contender for the win.
For now, he’s content with surviving a chaotic night, collecting valuable points, and proving once again that when things get unpredictable, he and his team can adapt. The long cautions might’ve drained the energy from the middle of the race, but Blaney’s performance kept things interesting, and hinted that better days could be just around the corner.
