Brooklyn Nets head coach Jordi Hernandez and his entire coaching staff have signed new contracts with the team.

ESPN’s Shams Charania revealed on Monday that Hernandez and his coaching staff all inked multiyear contract extensions with the Nets. As with most NBA coaching contracts, financial terms were not disclosed.

“The Brooklyn Nets have signed head coach Jordi Fernandez and the entire coaching staff to multiyear contract extensions, sources tell ESPN. This solidifies a long-term commitment for Fernandez after two seasons at the helm,” Charania wrote on his X account.

Jordi Fernandez Enters His 3rd Season as the Brooklyn Nets Head Coach

Fernandez just completed his second season as the Nets’ head coach. In his first season with the Nets, the team finished 26-56, finishing in fourth place in the Atlantic Division. This past season, the team took a step backwards, as the Nets concluded the season with a poor 20-62 record, finishing last in their division. Overall, Fernandez holds an overall record of 46-118 with the Nets as their head coach, for just a .280 winning percentage. However, the team is in the midst of a rebuild, so the Nets’ record isn’t the most important factor for GM Sean Marks. Instead, it’s the development of young players.

This past season, the Nets had four first-round picks, and they drafted Egor Demin, Nolan Traore, Ben Sharaf, and Danny Wolf. All four of these players were on the Nets’ roster this past season, and while the team did not have a good record, all of these youngsters showed promise at different points during the season. Fernandez and his coaching staff were praised for their tutelage of these young players, which is part of the reason why they received contract extensions.

The Nets will likely be in a tough position to make the playoffs next season in the Eastern Conference, but if these young players continue to improve, they could potentially challenge for a spot in the Play-In Tournament.

Nets Have High Draft Pick, Plenty of Cap Space

The Nets finished with the third-worst record in the NBA, so they have a 14% chance of winning the first overall pick in the 2026 NBA entry draft. They also have a 52.1% chance of getting a top-four pick in the draft, so they have a good chance of adding a premium young talent to the team. They will also have two second-round picks in the draft, which they can either use to draft young players, stash prospects, or sell.

The Nets will also have plenty of cap space to play with this offseason, with ESPN’s Bobby Marks projecting the team to have at least $31 million in cap space. That means the Nets can be serious players during free agency this offseason, or potentially take on another team’s big-money contracts to acquire more draft picks. This happened this past offseason, when the Nets took on the contract of Michael Porter Jr. from the Denver Nuggets in exchange for Cameron Johnson. As a sweetener for the contract swap, the Nets received an unprotected future first-round pick from the Nuggets, a valuable piece of draft capital as the years go on.
