The Charlotte Hornets came out victorious in one of the most thrilling Play-In games in recent times by defeating the Miami Heat 127-126 in overtime at Spectrum Center.
Early in the second quarter, Ball drove toward the basket and missed a layup attempt. As he fell to the floor, cameras caught him appearing to reach out with his left arm and grab Adebayo’s left leg, sending Miami’s star center crashing hard onto his tailbone.
Adebayo remained on the court in pain before eventually walking to the locker room under his own power and never returned. He was later diagnosed with a lower back injury. Crucially, Ball was not called for a foul on the play.
Heat Coach’s Fury
Heat coach Erik Spoelstra didn’t hold back in his post-game presser, unloading on the officials and the league:
“I don’t think it’s cute. I don’t think it’s funny. I think it’s a stupid play. It’s a dangerous play. He should be penalized for that. I don’t think that belongs in the game, tripping guys. Somebody has got to see that. He should have been thrown out of the game for that.”
Strong words. Given that Adebayo is the Heat’s most important player, his absence clearly impacted Miami’s chances.
An NBA Analyst Fires Back
Not everyone agreed with Spoelstra. A prominent NBA analyst pushed back hard, flipping the narrative entirely back on Miami:
“We can’t do this. Did Ball grab Bam Adebayo’s foot? Yes. Did he deserve to get ejected? No. Control what you can control. Do you realize the Miami Heat have been in the Play-In tournament for 4 consecutive seasons? Which is crazy. How about winning games in the regular season so you don’t put yourself in a position for 1-game elimination.”
The tone of the reply is pretty reasonable – yet it is not completely convincing. The question of whether the Heat deserve to be in the Play-In is different from whether a harmful, reckless action by a star player should go unpunished. I think Spoelstra was right to call for responsibility. Both points are valid.
Ball Breaks His Silence
LaMelo himself addressed the play with a straightforward apology after the game:
“I apologize on that one. I got hit in the head, didn’t really know where I was, but I’mma check on him and see if he’s okay and everything.”
With the Heat eliminated, Charlotte now advances to face the loser of Wednesday’s Philadelphia 76ers vs. Orlando Magic Play-In matchup. That game is scheduled for Friday at 7:30 PM ET on Prime Video, with the winner claiming the No. 8 seed in the Eastern Conference and a first-round playoff clash against the top-seeded Detroit Pistons. For a Hornets team chasing their first playoff appearance in a decade, Friday is everything.
With the game done and LaMelo’s apology acknowledged, the decision now lies with the NBA. The league’s refereeing team is a regular practice of going over the plays that were either missed or incorrectly called live, and due to the seriousness of Adebayo’s injury and the amount of buzz this incident has created, a review of the game for discipline purposes after the game seems not only probable but also justified.
