Ahead of the NBA trade deadline, the Cleveland Cavaliers made a couple of bold moves to improve their roster for the final stretch of the 2025-26 NBA season, with the team landing superstar guard James Harden being the one trade that could be a game-changer for the franchise.
Unfortunately, only a few games into his stint with the Cavs, Harden has suffered a concerning hand injury: a fractured right thumb.
With the Cavs having championship aspirations this season, Harden suffering this injury in the final stretch of the regular season isn’t ideal. However, he has a history of playing through injuries, and that seems to be the case here, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.
“James Harden has been evaluated by a hand specialist, and I’m told he plans to play through that fracture in his right thumb moving forward,” Charania said. “No surgery is required, so he will be playing on. There’s going to be a lot of managing through the pain through treatment over the next few days. … He wants to play through this injury. He will be playing through this injury. Expect him to wear a wrap or a splint. He’s played through an assortment of injuries throughout his NBA career, and now this fracture in his right thumb will be just another one.”
According to Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com, Harden could be available as early as Friday to face the Eastern Conference-leading Detroit Pistons, but there is concern about whether he’ll be the same caliber of player while playing through the thumb fracture.
Even if Harden fights through it — and there is measured optimism he could be available as early as Friday against Detroit — playing through a fractured thumb isn’t without serious consequences. The conversation isn’t just whether he suits up. It’s whether he can be the same player if he does.
It’ll be interesting to see how Harden handles this latest injury and whether it affects the Cavs’ hopes of being a legitimate Eastern Conference title contender moving forward.

Obviously, this isn’t an ideal situation for Harden and the Cavs, but the future Hall of Famer remains confident heading into the final 25 games of the regular season.
“We got what, 25 games? I think we can get there,” Harden said via Cavs Roundtable. “Matter of fact, I know we can get there. I think it’s going to start defensively because offensively we can have six guys in double figures. Defensive is going to be key. If we can really hone in defensively and get stops, we’re going to be very, very tough.”
As of Thursday, the Cavs are sitting in fourth place in the East with a 37-23 record and have won eight of their last 10 games, as things seem to be coming together in Cleveland, with Harden and fellow superstar Donovan Mitchell leading the way.
The Cavs will have a tough challenge ahead of them against the Pistons, who have also won eight of their last 10 games, with Cade Cunningham making his case to be among the elite players in the NBA MVP race.
