After the 2025-2026 NBA season, Detroit Pistons free agent Jalen Duren probably imagined being locked into a long-term deal by late August.

Unfortunately, that hasn’t been his reality.

When Jalen Duren returned to his hometown in Sharon Hill, Pennsylvania, the NBA big man had to face a question about his contract situation–which can be described as a standoff with the Pistons.

He didn’t give the public his thoughts.

“What a fun day in Sharon Hill. Jalen Duren was back in his hometown for his annual community fun day and basketball league. And the city surprised him with a street named after him. He’s been active member of this community even after leave for college,” 6ABC’s Jason Dumas wrote on X on August 22.

“I did ask Jalen about his contract situation, as it’s very much been a bit contentious with the Pistons. He respectfully declined. And I don’t blame him for doing so.”

Duren’s silence on the contract saga this offseason is far from surprising. Discussing his thoughts publicly wouldn’t really help his case, whether he keeps his comments positive or takes a different direction.

Before the start of the 2025-2026 NBA season, Duren hoped to secure a long-term deal. It didn’t work out. At first, it was disappointing, but Duren ended up driving his value up to supermax potential.

He went from being a solid starting center in 2024-2025 to being an All-NBA/All-Star in 2025-2026. Duren became eligible for the $287.1 million supermax.

After struggling in the playoffs, Duren’s value in the eyes of the Pistons and the rest of the league shot down. Whatever offer Detroit placed on the table hasn’t been enough for Duren to sign. The rest of the league has avoided making an offer as well.

Duren has time to figure it all out, but the October deadline will be here before he knows it. Unless the Pistons open up the lines to entertain sign-and-trades, Duren will either have to take a long-term deal that goes beyond next season, or simply play on the qualifying offer next year, before becoming a free agent again.
