After leaving the Golden State Warriors in May 2023, Bob Myers signed as an analyst for ESPN three months later. The former Warriors GM is moving on from his television gig after just two years for greener pastures.
In a press release on October 17, Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment announced that Myers is joining the organization as president of sports. HBSE is owned by Josh Harris and David Blitzer, who own the Philadelphia 76ers in the NBA, the New Jersey Devils in the NHL, Crystal Palace FC of the Premier League and Joe Gibbs Racing in NASCAR.
“I have been fortunate to know Josh and David for a long time, and I’ve always greatly admired them and respected how they’ve built such an impressive global sports portfolio. This role was intriguing because it provides the opportunity to work with some of the industry’s most talented leaders and executives across the world’s biggest sports leagues,” Myers said in a statement.
The four-time NBA champion executive is also supporting Harris in his work as a managing partner of the Washington Commanders in the NFL. Myers has been working as an advisor to Harris since last year.
According to Mike Vorkunov and Alex Andrejev of The Athletic, Myers is expected to work with Daryl Morey, the current president of basketball operations for the Sixers.
Bob Myers Built The Warriors’ Dynasty
The Golden State Warriors won four NBA championships from 2015 to 2022, and the man who built it was Bob Myers. He began his sports career as an agent from 1997 to 2011, representing players like Brandon Roy, Tyrese Evans, Brook Lopez and JJ Redick.
Myers was hired by Warriors owner Joe Lacob to be the assistant general manager under Larry Riley. He was promoted less than a year later and began his tenure by drafting Harrison Barnes, Festus Ezeli and Draymond Green.
Green turned into one of the best second-round picks in NBA history, becoming the heart of the Warriors dynasty’s defense. He signed Andre Iguodala in 2013 and hired Steve Kerr as coach in 2014. They won their first championship in 40 years in 2014, with Steph Curry at the helm.
However, Myers’ biggest move was signing Kevin Durant in free agency after the Warriors lost the 2016 NBA Finals. It led to back-to-back titles in 2017 and 2018 before Durant left in the 2019 offseason, as per Basketball Reference.
While Durant’s arrival was the biggest, Myers also put together the unlikely championship team in 2022. Andrew Wiggins turned into an All-Star, Curry proved his doubters wrong, Jordan Poole turned into a star, and it was redemption for Klay Thompson after two years out with injuries.
Why Did HBSE Sign Bob Myers?
Since being founded in 2017, HBSE hasn’t won any championships from its sports properties outside of Crystal Palace’s FA Cup win last season. Bob Myers was hired because of his history in building the Golden State Warriors’ dynasty.
“Our goal has been to hire, grow, and retain the best and brightest executives in the world and we are a stronger, more dynamic organization with the addition of Bob Myers. His experience as an architect of championship teams will complement our existing leadership structure, while also allowing HBSE to maximize opportunities across our portfolio. We’re excited to have Bob continue his storied career here at HBSE,” Josh Harris and David Blitzer said in a statement.
Myers is tasked with helping the Philadelphia 76ers win their first NBA championship since 1983. The New Jersey Devils have not won a Stanley Cup since 2003. HBSE was also awarded a WNBA expansion team, which will make its debut in 2030.
