Four-time NBA champion Stephen Curry will be 39 when he attempts to reach the NBA playoffs next year amid his relentless pursuit of a fifth championship. However, with the Golden State Warriors star entering the 2026-27 season on an expiring contract, there are legitimate questions about his future in the Bay Area for the first time in his 17-year career.
After the Warriors’ season ended on Friday without a playoff berth — for the second time in three years — Curry was asked about his contract situation. The two-time MVP all but confirmed he plans to play into his 40s, but had an interesting response when asked about re-upping with the Warriors.
“For sure,” Curry said if he wanted a contract extension from Golden State.
“But none of those conversations have happened, so it’ll be a busy summer for the Warriors,” he added with a huge smile.
Steph Curry Contract Situation
Some believe Curry was putting the Warriors front office on notice — not only to take care of him financially but to surround him with a championship-level roster next year.
After Friday’s loss, The Athletic’s Nick Friedell and Marcus Thompson II reported on the complexities involved in the Warriors getting a new deal done with Curry.
“Will Curry sign a contract extension this offseason? One year or two? Does he take the maximum salary again or lower his cap hit?
“More importantly, how much can the Warriors still rely on him?
“The wear and tear he has built up after 17 years in the league came to the forefront more this season than in years past. Just before returning in early April, Curry acknowledged his “new normal” around a lingering runner’s knee issue that will likely impact his remaining years in the league on some level.”
Warriors Enter Crucial Summer
The idea of Curry playing elsewhere is unfathomable, but stranger things have happened in sports. Earlier this year, The Athletic’s Sam Amick reported that Curry plans to ride it out with the Warriors until the end of his career, even if he’s unable to compete for another title.
“I don’t see it. No shot,” Amick said of Curry seeking a trade from the Warriors.
“Steph has never sent any signals that he has any intention of anything other than finishing [his career] with the Warriors. He still has good relationships with Joe Lacob, Mike Dunleavy and the coaching staff. He still has a level of belief in them.”
“I mean, it’s pro sports, so never say never,” Amick added.
With Draymond Green and Jimmy Butler III also on expiring contracts, many beleive the 2026-27 season could be the last ride for the Warriors.
