Stephen Curry #30 of the Golden State Warriors warms up prior to the game against the Dallas Mavericks at American Airlines Center on January 22, 2026 in Dallas, Texas.

Veteran guard Stephen Curry has reportedly given no indication to the Golden State Warriors about seeking a trade after Jimmy Butler III’s season-ending ACL injury ended his hopes of pursuing a fifth NBA title this season.

Per The Athletic’s Sam Amick, Curry remains committed to the franchise that drafted him in 2009 and still prefers to end his storied career in the Bay Area.

“I don’t see it. No shot,” Amick said of Curry seeking a trade from the Warriors on “Run it Back” on FanDuel TV.

“Steph has never sent any signals that he has any intention of anything other than finishing [his career] with the Warriors. He still has good relationships with Joe Lacob, Mike Dunleavy and the coaching staff. He still has a level of belief in them.”

Will Stephen Curry Ride it Out?

Amick added that the question of Curry’s future is asked “a whole lot more” by rival executives, but no one has ever feared his departure within the Warriors organization.

“I mean, it’s pro sports, so never say never,” Amick said of Curry’s possible departure.

The insider feels the one factor that could change Curry’s mind is the looming exit of head coach Steve Kerr, who is reportedly unlikely to return for next season. Curry, who has the option of becoming a free agent in 2027, could potentially signal his future intentions if he doesn’t sign an extension this summer with the Warriors.

Warriors Face Uncertain Future

The question about Curry’s future is a fair one. The sharpshooter turns 38 in March and will be 39 during the 2027 playoffs, when Butler would have presumably returned from his ACL injury. At that point, Butler and Draymond Green would both be 37.

As such, it seems unlikely that three players in their late 30s could challenge the might of the Oklahoma City Thunder, Denver Nuggets and San Antonio Spurs in a year. Essentially, Curry’s chances of competing for another championship in a Warriors uniform are rapidly fading, sparking rumors of a possible exit.

Yahoo Sports’ Tom Haberstroh feels there’s “a real chance” of Curry playing for another team if he exerts pressure on the Warriors front office to turn a new leaf.

“The door was always open to [Curry] to go elsewhere [after 2027], but it was only open a crack,” Haberstroh said.

“But now with Jimmy Butler’s injury, the crack opens up a lot more.”

“I still think he’s gonna be a Warrior for life, but if he says, ‘This has run its course, I want to compete at the highest level,’ I think that conversation becomes more real.”

While the idea of Curry in a non-Warriors uniform is unfathomable, stranger things have happened in the NBA. And unless the Warriors can swing a blockbuster trade to get him some help, the questions about his future will grow louder in the coming year.

Besides Curry, Green and Butler also have the option of becoming free agents in 2027. The Warriors roster could look drastically different starting from the 2027-28 season.
