The Golden State Warriors’ season ended last Friday at the hands of the Phoenix Suns in the NBA Play-In Tournament.
It might be the final time that Steve Kerr has coached the Warriors based on what he said to Steph Curry and Draymond Green after the game. Kerr entered this season with an expiring deal and refused to talk about his future until the final game of the campaign.
In 12 seasons in charge of Golden State, Kerr led the Warriors to four NBA championships in six NBA Finals appearances. The Warriors also missed the playoffs four times during his tenure, including two of the last three years.
Kerr Not Expected to Return Next Season

GettyHead coach Steve Kerr of the Golden State Warriors looks on against the Dallas Mavericks in the second half at Chase Center on December 25, 2025 in San Francisco, California.
According to sources cited by NBC Sports Bay Area’s Monte Poole, Kerr doesn’t have a problem about not having a job next season. Money is also not going to be a factor in Kerr’s decision about his Warriors future.
“They could offer Steve $25 million a year, and I doubt that alone would make a difference,’ one source told Poole.
Poole added that the four-time champion coach will need to have a “change of heart” about his role regarding what the franchise wants moving forward.
ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne and Anthony Slater reported on Monday that Warriors management wants to make a change in their offense and coaching philosophy. They also want a multi-year commitment from Kerr if he decides to be at the helm moving forward.
“If Kerr returns, they will discuss staffing and what management believes is a need for philosophy tweaks, team sources said, focusing on diversifying the offensive attack and winning the analytically friendly possession battle more often,” Shelburne and Slater wrote.
The report added that there’s a feeling of disappointment with the overreliance on 3-point shooting, as well as inconsistencies and turnovers.
Injuries are also said to be a factor, though that was out of anyone’s hands, considering what happened to Jimmy Butler and Moses Moody was freak accidents.
Green Hints About Kerr’s Future

GettyHead coach Steve Kerr, Stephen Curry #30 and Draymond Green #23 of the Golden State Warriors hug during the final moments of an NBA play-in tournament game against the Phoenix Suns at Mortgage Matchup Center on April 17, 2026 in Phoenix, Arizona.
On the latest episode of The Draymond Green Show, the Warriors veteran shared his thoughts on Kerr’s future in Golden State. He wants him to return next season, but he believes that might not be happening.
“Steph, myself, Steve shared a moment in what could be our last time playing with Steve as our coach,” Green said, via USA Today. “I’m happy we got to share that moment, like he didn’t miss the moment. It was a big deal. I hope he’s our coach next year. You want my opinion? I think not, just because it feels like that. It felt like that was it.”
Green also expressed doubt about his future with the Warriors. He has a player option for next season and could opt out to become a free agent.
A trade is also a possibility, especially with the franchise being linked to multiple superstars like LeBron James, Kawhi Leonard and Giannis Antetokounmpo.
