Warriors-Jonathan Kuminga Situation is ‘Toxic, Irreparable’

The contract impasse between Jonathan Kuminga and the Golden State Warriors is unlikely to be settled imminently, but the idea of the Congolese forward returning to the team for another season could lead to more toxicity.

Bay Area analyst Mark Willard said on July 30 that the situation has reached the point of “toxicity” that it can’t be repaired anymore.

“This feels toxic to me,” he said on his “95.7 The Game” radio show. “And a lot of these things happen underneath the covers. We only know what we know. And I’m damn sure it’s worse than what we know.”

Willard implored the Warriors to find Kuminga a new home, even if it means settling for a lesser offer, as he feels bringing back the player will ruin their 2025-26 season.

“It’s only July. Why invite this to your party when you already know that, in theory, you have other options? Jonathan Kuminga does not want to be here. He doesn’t want to be a Warrior anymore… This is toxic, and it’s getting worse.”

Ripple Effects of Stalemate

Willard attributed the Warriors’ quiet offseason — which hasn’t featured any free-agency signings — to the contract stalemate with Kuminga.

“They’re literally the only ones who haven’t made a move [in free agency],” he said of the Warriors. “… This guy has told Shams [Charania] that this organization stunted his growth. I don’t want that [attitude] on the team. He doesn’t want to be on this team.”

Kuminga took to social media to address the situation with the caption: “I’ll bet myself all day.”

Some analysts interpreted the message as Kuminga’s willingness to accept his one-year, $7.9 million qualifying offer, thereby becoming an unrestricted free agent in 2026.

Warriors Accepting QO Fate?

If Kuminga does accept the QO, the Warriors will find it even harder to trade Kuminga, as he’d be able to hit the open market next offseason. One NBA exec warned the Warriors of the exact situation recently.

“If he takes the qualifying offer, the Warriors are f–ked from a team-building standpoint, because they need to get him on a deal where they can trade him,” he told The Athletic’s Fred Katz. “That’s the key for them.”

The 22-year-old is reportedly looking for a longer-term deal closer to $90 million over four years. The Suns have been willing to match his price, but their reported package, headlined by Nick Richards, Royce O’Neale, and four second-round picks, was rebuffed by Golden State, according to ESPN’s Marc J Spears.

ESPN’s Charania and Anthony Slater provided additional details on the stalemate.

“The most significant negotiations have been with the Sacramento Kings and Phoenix Suns, getting proposals up to four years approaching $90 million total, including a player option for the final season, sources said. Phoenix has made the most lucrative push via sign-and-trade,” Charania and Slater reported.

Their report added that the Warriors may eventually choose to pull the plug on any sign-and-trade deals and just hold onto Kuminga for a year.

“In recent days, they have begun signaling a plan to cut off sign-and-trade conversations entirely, using their restricted free agency leverage to the fullest, sources said,” Charani and Slater wrote.
