The Los Angeles Lakers may need to pivot their offseason plans after a key potential target made his intentions clear.

Jalen Duren, long viewed as a possible solution to the Lakers’ need at center, indicated he wants to remain with the Detroit Pistons, dealing a potential blow to Los Angeles’ free agency outlook.

“I would love to be a Piston for life,” Duren told The Ringer, addressing past contract negotiations and his long-term outlook with the franchise.

Duren’s stance comes amid a breakout 2025–26 season that has elevated his value across the league.

The 22-year-old center earned his first All-Star selection and is considered a leading candidate for the NBA’s Most Improved Player award after posting career highs of 19.5 points per game while shooting 64.7% from the field and averaging nearly 11 rebounds.

His growth has coincided with Detroit’s rise to the top of the Eastern Conference, where the Pistons hold one of the league’s best records.

During a critical stretch without Cade Cunningham, who missed time with a collapsed lung, Duren further solidified his standing as a franchise cornerstone. He averaged 23.4 points and 10.5 rebounds while leading Detroit to a 6–2 record in Cunningham’s absence.

The performance reinforced that Duren is no longer just a complementary piece, but a player capable of carrying a team.

Lakers Previously Linked to Duren

Duren’s emergence had made him an especially intriguing target for the Lakers.

Cap analyst Yossi Gozlan of The Third Apron Substack previously identified Duren as a “fascinating” offseason option for Los Angeles, noting that the Lakers were among the few teams with the financial flexibility to potentially present a near-max offer sheet.

The Lakers’ interest aligned with roster needs.

Despite their late-season surge, Los Angeles has continued to lack a long-term solution at center — particularly one who could complement Luka Doncic as a rim-running, defensive anchor.

Duren had even appeared on Dončić’s reported list of preferred centers earlier this season, further connecting him to Los Angeles’ long-term plans.

Detroit Positioned to Keep Rising Star

Any pursuit, however, now appears increasingly unlikely.

Duren’s comments signal a strong mutual interest between the player and organization. Pistons general manager Trajan Langdon echoed that sentiment, stating the franchise also envisions Duren as a long-term cornerstone.

“We want him to be a Piston for life, too,” Langdon told The Ringer.

With Duren expected to command a near-max contract this offseason, Detroit is widely anticipated to match any offer he receives in restricted free agency.

That combination — player commitment and team control — significantly reduces the likelihood of a departure.

Lakers May Need to Pivot

For the Lakers, the development underscores the challenges of building a contender through free agency.

Even with projected cap flexibility this summer, landing a young, ascending center like Duren was always going to require both financial aggression and favorable circumstances.

Now, with Duren signaling his desire to stay in Detroit, Los Angeles may need to explore alternative options to address one of its most pressing roster needs.

The Lakers’ late-season success has strengthened their current outlook, but the offseason remains critical in determining whether they can sustain that momentum.

Long-Term Implications

Duren’s rise — and his apparent commitment to Detroit — highlights a broader reality for teams like the Lakers.

Elite young talent rarely becomes available.

And when it does, keeping it often becomes the priority.

For Los Angeles, that means the search for a long-term answer at the center is likely to continue.
