On October 6th, the NBA world stopped when LeBron James teased a second “decision,” immediately sending fans into a spiral.
Would he retire? Was it an ad for Amazon Prime, which was having “Prime Day” on October 7th? Was he demanding a trade? Fans would have to wait until the following day, although the announcement was spoiled an hour early.
Fans had bought tickets for the Los Angeles Lakers’ season finale, thinking it could very well be James’ last game. Instead, it ended up being an advertisement for Hennessy.

Fans React to LeBron James’ Hennessy Announcement
James used his platform to announce a partnership with Hennessy V.S.O.P. Some fans were under the assumption that the “Decision” would be an ad or something similar, although everyone thought there was a possibility he would be announcing his retirement.
On social media, fans were quick to sound off.
“Bro gaslit everyone for a Hennessy ad,” posted a fan in the congac brand’s comment section.
“There were little kids outside of my son’s elementary school this morning talking about what this was about,” joked another. “They’re going to be so disappointed it was just an ad for something they’re waaaaay too young to for.”
“Fire the entire marketing department and just get 4 random guys from Twitter that are chronically online because this was a humongous L,” urged another. “If sales go up I’ll be shocked.”
Of course, not everyone was upset by the announcement, as James’ biggest fans were thrilled to hear that the end of his career is not yet imminent.
LeBron James Is Yet to Announce His Retirement
James is preparing for his 23rd NBA season and will turn 41 years old in December. He became the first active player to share the court with his son, Bronny James, and continues to make history.
James tied Vince Carter for the most seasons, 22, last year, and will stand alone after he makes his debut. Carter and other players who suited up for more than 20 seasons were a shell of themselves at the end of their careers. James is coming off an All-NBA nod, so it’s feasible that he still has a lot of gas left in the tank.
“Thank god it’s LeHennessy,” posted a fan who was just happy that James will keep playing.
“You scared me, man,” added another.
“MY KING ISN’T RETIRING YET,” chimed in a third, clearly excited.
The end of James’ career is closer than fans and the league would like to admit. However, as he chases more titles and continues to play at a high level, retirement might not be at the forefront of his mind.
Getting a bag from advertisers clearly is.
