The relationship between the Los Angeles Lakers and LeBron James has grown chilly over the past couple weeks, which has analysts speculating on the superstar’s future — both in L.A. and the NBA in general.

All recent reports indicate that James has not officially asked for a trade. However, the four-time MVP started trade rumors rolling when he sent agent Rich Paul on a media mission to make his position known after exercising the $52.6 million player option on the final year of his contract.

“LeBron wants to compete for a championship. He knows the Lakers are building for the future. He understands that, but he values a realistic chance of winning it all,” Paul told Shams Charania of ESPN on June 29. “We do want to evaluate what’s best for LeBron at this stage in his life and career. He wants to make every season he has left count.”

While that wasn’t a trade demand, it certainly set the stage for one via the implied threat inherent to the message.

However, ESPN’s Dave McMenamin suggested on the Wednesday, July 16 edition of “NBA Today” that perhaps it’s not James’ future with the Lakers that fans and analysts should focus on, but rather his NBA future in general.

“I think we have to start thinking about if this could be his last year in the league,” McMenamin said. “Rich Paul told me, ‘Yeah, there was no extension talk because we didn’t ask for an extension. We didn’t broach the subject.’ … So I think you look at it like, yeah, there’s a very limited time remaining in [James’] career.”

James hasn’t mentioned retirement explicitly this offseason, though he has acknowledged considering it in each of the past two summers.

Already the oldest player in the league, James will enter a record 23rd NBA campaign in 2025-26. If he reaches 50 contests played, he will also hold the all-time mark for most regular-season games in a career.

Beyond that, James has appeared in 292 playoff games, which equals approximately another three and a half full seasons worth of work. Functionally then, he will have played 26 years in the league before the mid-February All-Star break hits.

Despite that grind, James earned second-team All-NBA honors last year after turning 40 in December.

Recent Reports Indicated LeBron James Could Play 3-5 More Years

Dan Woike of The Athletic noted on the July 14 edition of “The Zach Lowe Show” podcast that Charania recently reported that James could play between one and three more seasons.

Woike reminded the audience that Charania wasn’t speculating when uttering/writing those words, but was referencing actual reporting that implies James is contemplating three more years in the league. James himself said on his 40th birthday that he remains in good enough mental and physical shape that he could play another half-decade if he wanted.

All of that is interesting in the context of McMenamin’s suggestion Wednesday that James may well decide to hang up his sneakers after the 2025-26 campaign. The Lakers appear eager to get out of the James business, at least considering his current price tag, which is also the primary obstacle to getting a trade done this summer or ahead of the February deadline.

However, if James enters free agency next summer looking for a new deal, there will no doubt be a line of suitors — particularly if he’s willing to sign at a discount compared to what Los Angeles is currently paying him.
