Luka Dončić’s recovery progress has become a key storyline as the Lakers weigh their playoff timeline following a Game 4 loss.

The Los Angeles Lakers are facing a tighter-than-expected closeout scenario — and it may directly impact the recovery timeline of Luka Dončić.

After a Game 4 loss, the focus has shifted to two parallel goals: finishing the series quickly and buying time for their injured star to return at full strength.

Lakers Fall in Game 4, Miss Chance to Close Series Early

Houston avoided elimination with a 115-96 win in Game 4 behind 23 points from Amen Thompson and a balanced scoring effort that saw all five starters score at least 16 points.

The Lakers struggled offensively, committing 23 turnovers and making just five 3-pointers after hitting 35 combined in the first three games.

LeBron James finished with 10 points on 2-of-9 shooting, along with nine assists and eight turnovers before sitting late in the fourth quarter.

“If we want to win this series, we have to protect the ball,” James said. “The turnovers obviously killed us from start to finish.”

Los Angeles will now attempt to close the series in Game 5 on Wednesday at Crypto.com Arena.

Luka Dončić Shows Progress in Recovery

Amid the loss, there was a notable development in Dončić’s recovery.

Coach JJ Redick said before the game that the All-Star guard has begun increasing his on-court workload, moving beyond stationary drills.

“He just continues to kind of do some stuff on the court,” Redick said, via Benjamin Royer of the OC Register. “Was able to move a little bit today on the court, which, you know, most of the stuff has been standstill. So he’s progressing, but no update on any timeline or anything like that.”

The shift to movement work is often one of the final steps before a return to game action.

Lakers Insider Projects Luka Dončić Return Window

Jovan Buha, formerly of The Athletic, who now covers the Lakers independently through his podcast Buha’s Block, said the update offers a meaningful clue.

“JJ Redick said today that Luka has started to increase his on-court workload, and that started today specifically,” Buha said on his podcast following the Lakers’ Game 4 loss. “Before this, Luka had been doing standstill stuff — we’ve seen him shooting stationary shots or little shots in the paint, but nothing at game speed.”

Buha added that the progression is encouraging — and could signal a return window.

“A couple of the doctors I follow have thrown out that based on this update and Luka’s original timetable, it could indicate about 10 to 14 days from now as a realistic return,” Buha said.

That timeline would place Dončić’s return in early-to-mid May.

“Depending on the second-round schedule, that could be as early as Game 2, but more realistically somewhere in that Game 3, Game 4 range,” Buha added.

Medical Outlook Aligns With Timeline Projection

That estimate aligns with outside analysis.

Sports medicine expert Dr. Evan Jeffries called the latest update “great news,” noting that movement work typically signals a short ramp-up phase.

“Great news.. this usually means a 1-2 week ramp-up timeline from this point,” Jeffries wrote. “He is almost at 4 weeks since the injury, meaning his 4-6 week recovery timeline was pretty much accurate.”

Why Closing Series Early Matters for Lakers

The Game 4 loss complicates matters.

The Lakers had an opportunity to sweep the series and gain extended rest — not only for Dončić, but also for a veteran core led by the 41-year-old James.

Instead, Los Angeles must now expend additional energy to close out Houston while balancing long-term priorities.

If they advance, the Lakers are likely to face the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder, who hold a 3-0 lead over the Phoenix Suns.

That makes timing critical.

A Game 3 or Game 4 return from Dončić could still swing a second-round series — but only if the Lakers can handle business first.

For now, the team remains without a formal timetable.

But the window is becoming clearer — and the margin for error is shrinking.
