The Minnesota Timberwolves have made back-to-back Western Conference Finals appearances. They fell to the Mavericks and the Thunder in those seasons. This season, they were expecting to still be one of the top teams in the West.

Right now, the Timberwolves are fifth in the Western Conference standings. They are still near the top, but they need to make some moves in order to win the conference. The point guard spot has been a weak link on the roster, so they might address that spot.

With the trade deadline just a couple of months away, Minnesota has been linked to an Eastern Conference guard who would be better utilized with a contender.

Minnesota Timberwolves Have Interest in Reserve East Guard

According to NBA insider Jake Fischer, the Wolves have interest in Hornets guard Collin Sexton. Sexton currently comes off the bench in Charlotte, but the Hornets are not playoff contenders. He was traded to the Hornets in the offseason, giving them a veteran guard that they desperately needed.

Sexton is currently injured, having missed the last seven games with a quad injury. His shooting efficiency and points per game are down, but that is likely correlated to the fact that the Hornets are bad. Even with that being the case, he has the second-highest true shooting percentage of his career.

Minnesota might need more of a true point guard instead of Sexton, who is more of a combo guard. Right now, the Timberwolves start Donte DiVincenzo at point guard. Mike Conley’s playing time has dwindled this season, as age seems to have caught up with him.

If the Timberwolves can’t seem to find a true point guard, Sexton would be a good option to come off the bench. He would likely take Conley’s minutes completely, leaving him out of the rotation. They need someone who is better defensively than Conley.

The Timberwolves Will Explore All Trade Possibilities

Minnesota is certainly a team to watch during the trade deadline. With them being in the top five of a very loaded West, they will need to make a move to have any shot of competing with Oklahoma City. Getting a point guard should be the top priority for them when the deadline approaches.

The Wolves will be looking to unload Rob Dillingham in any trade for a point guard, as they clearly have lost faith in him. He will not be part of the team’s future. Adding a veteran player seems to be the path that Minnesota is looking to take.

There hasn’t been an in-season trade in the NBA yet, which is slightly unusual. It looks like most teams will be waiting until the deadline gets nearer to really make a move. As the Wolves try to make that leap to the next level, they will make sure to explore all of the options that will be available to them.
