Timberwolves Make Calculated Deadline Trade, Stay Engaged in Giannis Talks

Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks is defended by Ayo Dosunmu, who is now traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves.

The Minnesota Timberwolves, believing they remain firmly in the mix for a potential Giannis Antetokounmpo blockbuster, made a smaller but deliberate move at the NBA trade deadline aimed at strengthening their rotation without sacrificing long-term flexibility.

According to ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania, Minnesota traded Rob Dillingham, Leonard Miller, and four second-round picks to the Chicago Bulls in exchange for Ayo Dosunmu and Julian Phillips.

Timberwolves Move On From Rob Dillingham Experiment

The trade marked a swift end to Minnesota’s brief investment in Dillingham, once viewed internally as a potential point guard of the future.

On draft night in 2024, the Timberwolves paid a steep price to acquire Dillingham, sending out an unprotected 2031 first-round pick and a 2030 pick swap to select him at No. 8 overall. Less than a year later, Minnesota added four second-round picks to offload the former lottery selection, signaling a clear pivot away from a developmental timeline.

While costly in draft capital, league sources view the decision as a byproduct of urgency rather than regret, with Minnesota prioritizing win-now contributors around Anthony Edwards.

Ayo Dosunmu Adds Defense, Shooting, and Flexibility

In Dosunmu, Minnesota acquires a plug-and-play rotation guard on an expiring $7.5 million contract. The 6-foot-4 guard is averaging 15.0 points while shooting 45.1% from three-point range, along with 3.6 assists and 3.0 rebounds.

According to ESPN salary cap analyst Bobby Marks, the trade also provides a valuable contractual advantage.

“Pre-free agency strikes again with Minnesota acquiring soon-to-be free agent Ayo Dosunmu,” Marks wrote on X. “Without the trade, it would have been highly unlikely that Minnesota could have signed him as a free agent. Minnesota now inherits his Bird rights, allowing them to exceed the cap in a new deal.”

Dosunmu now joins Naz Reid and Bones Hyland on a bench that projects as a solid eight-man rotation — barring a Giannis-level shakeup.

Giannis Talks Continue as Wolves Push All-In

Despite the marginal nature of the move, Minnesota’s broader focus remains unchanged.

Charania previously reported that the Timberwolves and the Miami Heat remain the most engaged teams in Antetokounmpo discussions.

“Giannis Antetokounmpo has made it clear to those that need to know within the Bucks organization that he is ready for a new home, whether it’s now or in the offseason,” Charania said on ESPN’s SportsCenter. “I’m told the focus of those conversations have been primarily on Miami and Minnesota.”

NBA insider Marc Stein added that Minnesota has maintained a singular focus on Antetokounmpo, even as other star options surfaced briefly this week.

Shedding Mike Conley Jr. earlier dropped the Timberwolves below the first luxury-tax apron, restoring their ability to aggregate contracts — a crucial mechanism for a Giannis-scale trade. Stein reported that Minnesota has made Julius RandleDonte DiVincenzoJaden McDaniels and Rudy Gobert available in talks.

“The issue for the Timberwolves remains creating enough tradeable draft capital to satisfy Milwaukee,” Stein wrote.

NBA insider Jake Fischer added, shortly before the Dosonmu trade, that “The Wolves and Heat, sources say, still believe they are in play for landing Giannis Antetokounmpo today, although like the Warriors, few believe Milwaukee is actually serious about parting ways with their franchise face.”

Anthony Edwards Hopes for Mike Conley Reunion

Meanwhile, Edwards expressed hope that Conley could return if he becomes available following a buyout.

“Mike’s my guy,” Edwards said after Wednesday’s win in Toronto. “He’s like an OG to me… hopefully we can get him back.”

Conley was ultimately rerouted to the Charlotte Hornets, a sequence that triggered the rarely used “Andrew Bogut Rule,” potentially allowing Minnesota to re-sign him if he is bought out — another reminder that even amid a Giannis chase, the Timberwolves are maneuvering on every level to maximize their options.
