Long viewed as an attractive free agent destination, New York could finally get its hands on LeBron James, America’s mega-athlete of the modern era.

The Knicks are in a prime position to make their first NBA Finals appearance in nearly 30 years, so grabbing James isn’t something twirling the thoughts of the front office.

But if the outcome of this Knicks season is anything less than expected, it swings the door wide open to numerous offseason possibilities.

According to CBS Sports’ Sam Quinn, this summer will likely be James’ last chance to play with the franchise dreams and rumors have long tethered him to.

So why not seize the opportunity?

“Of course, the Knicks are not only alive this postseason, but playing very well,” Quinn wrote on CBSSports.com. “They could make the Finals without James and, while they’d be underdogs against whoever came out of the West, anything can happen in seven games. If the Knicks end the drought on their own, the conversation ends then and there. If it doesn’t, this would potentially be James’ last chance to end a decades-long flirtation with the Knicks. He called New York his ‘favorite city’ all the way back in 2008, when his every quote was monitored ahead of his 2010 free agency. When he and [Dywane] Wade played their final game against one another, he was caught saying the game could only have happened at the then-Staples Center ‘or the Garden.’ … The stars never quite aligned. Maybe they could now.”

What Would it Take to Land LeBron James? What Can N.Y. Offer?

Adding James would likely come through a direct free agency signing, not a sign-and-trade or simple trade.

James, 41, is set to enter unrestricted free agency in July. The 2025-26 season marked the first time in James’ 23-year career that he played without a guaranteed contract or player-option for the following season.

If James leaves the Los Angeles Lakers, he is looking at a real scenario where he would need to accept a salary monumentally lower than what the Lakers could offer him. But according to reports, James would be open to taking a not-so-fabulous salary if other circumstances seem fitting to him.

“There’s no question about salary,” Quinn wrote. “The Knicks could only offer the minimum. They’re positioned to bolt beyond the second apron next season if they keep the team together. If they pursue a major trade, like for, say, Giannis Antetokounmpo, it would hard cap them at the second apron and force them to pinch pennies. Money won’t be a factor here.”

Added Quinn: “Keep in mind: Knicks president Leon Rose was once his agent. Rose was also the mentor to James’ agent, Rich Paul, but that relationship was reportedly frosty until they hashed things out in 2024. Now that fences have been mended, a path to New York looks slightly more realistic than it once did.”

Knicks Cannot Waste This Opportunity

As things stand, the Knicks have plenty weighing heavier on their minds than a potential path to signing James.

The Knicks are locked into a postseason where their NBA Finals chances seem higher than any time over the last nearly three decades.

With the Boston Celtics stunned by the Philadelphia 76ers in the first round and the Indiana Pacers failing to qualify for even the play-in tournament, the Knicks’ top competitors for the East crown are long out of sight. New York is picked by many to reach the championship round.

A lot of that has to do with what the team has been doing lately.

The Knicks will enter Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals next week on a seven-game winning streak, with an average point differential of 26.4 in those games.

With star forward OG Anunoby expected to be ready for the conference finals, the Knicks are perfectly positioned to capture their first Eastern Conference banner in 27 years.
