Tyrese Maxey leads the NBA in minutes played

Heading into the Philadelphia 76ers’ matchup against the Miami Heat, Tyrese Maxey was on pace to make history.

The star guard needed three shots to fall from beyond the arc in order to tie Allen Iverson, who holds the record for the most three-pointers in franchise history. The magic number for Maxey was 885.

With four minutes left to go in the first quarter, Maxey tied the Basketball Hall of Famer. Shortly after, he knocked down his fourth three of the night to officially become the franchise leader in the three-point scoring category.

Iverson is one of the most iconic players to wear a Sixers uniform.

Anytime a player lands in the same company as the former No. 1 pick it’s a great sign for the franchise.

Coming up, Iverson played in an NBA that didn’t value the three-point shot as much. He wasn’t the most efficient shooter from deep (30% throughout his Sixers tenure), but he wasn’t hesitant to let it fly.

Playing 12 years for the 76ers, Iverson got up plenty of shots during his time. He attempted 2,864 threes during his stint with the Sixers.

Before Iverson was dealt to the Denver Nuggets, he appeared in over 720 games for the Sixers. Throughout his career in Philadelphia, he produced 27.6 points per game, along with 6.1 assists and 3.9 rebounds.

Maxey surpasses Iverson in the record books in half the time. During his sixth season, Maxey managed to get over 885 threes. Clearly, the young veteran has turned into a high-volume shooter from deep, keeping up with today’s NBA.

While Maxey entered the league with questions about his deep shot, he took a massive leap in two seasons. As a rookie, he drained 30% from three. By year two, he was a 42% three-point shooter, taking 4.1 attempts per game.

In year six, Maxey is knocking down threes at a 37% clip. He takes 8.9 threes per game.

He wasn’t a top pick coming out of college like Iverson, but the Sixers have watched Maxey develop into a potential franchise legend. During the 2023-2024 NBA season, the Sixers guard became an All-Star for the first time. He was also named the NBA’s Most Improved Player.

While Maxey didn’t crack the All-Star game two years in a row, he was back in the big game this season. Throughout his first 56 games of the year, the former Kentucky star has posted averages of 29.1 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 6.7 assists.

Going into the February 26 game against the Miami Heat, the Sixers held a 32-26 record. Maxey and the Sixers are sixth in the Eastern Conference, looking to work their way back into the playoff picture after missing out in 2025.
