After restructuring running back James Conner’s contract, the Arizona Cardinals have added to their backfield.

The Cardinals have signed running back Tyler Allgeier to a two-year, $12.25 million deal, according to NFL insider Jordan Schultz.

After backing up superstar running back Bijan Robinson in Atlanta for the past three seasons, Allgeier will potentially be the backup for Conner.

The 5-foot-10, 225-pound running back will provide a goal-line presence for Arizona.

Entering his age-26 season, Allgeier has shown flashes throughout his career. Despite backing up one of the best running backs in the NFL, he has proven to be a quality backup and potential starter.

What Does Allgeier Bring to the Arizona Cardinals?

Allgeier was an elite running back for BYU, rushing for over 2700 yards in his two years that he started.

During that time, he also rushed for 36 touchdowns.

The Atlanta Falcons drafted Allgeier in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL Draft. He immediately took over as the team’s starting runningback and immediately produced.

As a rookie, Allgeier rushed for 1035 yards on 4.9 yards per attempt and three touchdowns. He also corralled 16 passes for 139 yards and a touchdown.

However, this wasn’t enough to pass up drafting Robinson eighth overall in the 2023 draft.

Robinson would become the immediate starter, relegating Allgeier to a backup role.

But that didn’t mean Allgeier would hardly get the ball in favor of a three-down back.

Allgeier, in the next three seasons, would get at least 150 touches in each year, solid numbers for a backup running back. He was also used as a power back on the goal-line, finding paydirt 15 times during that span.

As a runner, Allgeier is physical, often getting solid yards after contact. He doesn’t receive many passes (career high of 18 catches in 2023), but he will make the most of what he is given.

What is Allgeier’s Fit in the Desert?

Allgeier enters the desert as a backup to Conner, but has the opportunity to supplant the age-31 running back and fan favorite.

Conner sustained a significant injury in 2025 and played just three games. When he was on the field, the results weren’t spectacular. Conner rushed for just 95 yards on 3.0 yards per carry, a career low.

The running back room was ill-fit to be without Conner, as their leading rusher was Michael Carter with 333 yards.

Former third-round pick Trey Benson was expected to have a significant role with Arizona after an injury-plagued year. That is now on hold for the third-year back.

Benson played in just four games in 2025, rushing for 160 yards on 5.5 yards per attempt.

While the running back room is improved now with the addition of Allgeier, getting an Average Annual Value of $6 million likely means that this will be Conner’s last year in the desert.

Conner will be entering free agency after the 2026 season, his sixth in the valley.

With the crowded backfield in Arizona, it now appears unlikely the Cardinals will spend significant draft capital on a running back, ending the Jeremiyah Love rumors.
