Falcons' head coach Kevin Stefanski revealed that Michael Penix Jr. has taken a big step in his injury rehab

The Atlanta Falcons entered the 2026 campaign hoping to have a quarterback battle on their hands between Michael Penix Jr. and Tua Tagovailoa, but Penix’s recovery from a partially torn ACL threw a wrench in those plans. Tagovailoa appears to be in line to be the Falcons’ Week 1 starter, but with Penix continuing to inch closer to full health, anything could happen here.

After taking over as the team’s new head coach, Kevin Stefanski has had a lot of work to do when it comes to assessing the state of his roster, but figuring out the quarterback situation is easily the biggest item on his to-do list. With that in mind, Stefanski issued a major update on Penix’s injury rehab that could make this quarterback battle quite interesting over the final few weeks of training camp.

Michael Penix Jr. Cleared for 11-on-11 Drills

Atlanta handed Penix the starting quarterback job in 2025, and while he wasn’t awful, he was a game manager at best. In nine games, Penix threw for 1,982 yards and nine touchdowns, with the main issue being that the Falcons won just three of his starts. A partially torn ACL cut Penix’s season short, but even if he stayed fully healthy, the Falcons probably would have added some competition at quarterback this offseason.

That led the team to sign Tagovailoa to a one-year, $1.2 million contract in free agency after he was cut by the Miami Dolphins. Tagovailoa looked like a shell of himself during his final two years with the Dolphins, and he hasn’t looked much better to begin training camp with his new team. Penix’s injury status, though, prevented him from making a real push to challenge Tagovailoa for the starting job.

With training camp winding down, though, that could be set to change, as Penix is continuing to make incremental progress in his rehab process. On Saturday, Stefanski relayed to reporters that Penix has been cleared for 11-on-11 drills, which is a big step forward for him as he attempts to make the quarterback competition interesting.

“Falcons HC Kevin Stefanski told reporters that QB Michael Penix Jr. now has been cleared to return to 11-on-11 work,” Adam Schefter of ESPN shared in a post on X.

While this is a big development in Penix’s quest to get back on the field, it probably doesn’t change the fact that he won’t be the Week 1 starter. The Falcons are intent on playing it safe with Penix, and Tagovailoa can hold down the fort at the very least to begin the year. If he struggles, though, that will give Atlanta even more of an incentive to turn things over to Penix when he is fully healthy.

With Tagovailoa not really locking down the starting job for himself yet, though, Stefanski appears intent on leaving the door open for him to make a late push if his body cooperates. The likelihood of that happening is admittedly low, but Penix’s injury rehab bears watching over the next couple of weeks, especially if Tagovailoa doesn’t do enough to make the starting gig his own.
