The Atlanta Falcons are quickly putting together a coaching staff together for Kevin Stefanski.
Atlanta is expected to hire Tommy Rees as the Falcons’ new offensive coordinator, according to a report from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
Rees will now join defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich on new head coach Kevin Stefanski’s coaching staff.
Who is Tommy Rees?
Tommy Rees will follow Kevin Stefanski to Atlanta after a forgettable season with the Browns in 2025.
Rees, 33, played quarterback at the University of Norte Dame and worked on the coaching staff from 2017 to 2023.
“Rees previously served as the Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator under Stefanski in 2025 after joining the staff as an assistant in 2024,” Matt Urben wrote in a Falcons Wire article. “Prior to his stint in Cleveland, Rees was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Alabama in 2023 and held the same role at Notre Dame from 2020-2023.”
In his one season with Alabama, Rees helped coach the Crimson Tide to a 12-2 season, with a win in the SEC Championship.
The Cleveland Browns had the 30th ranked total offense in the NFL in 2025. The team also had quarterback troubles starting 3 different quarterbacks in one season.
“After drafting Dillon Gabriel in the third round, the Browns took Shedeur Sanders in the fifth round. This was after signing Joe Flacco and trading for Kenny Pickett,” Urben added in the article. “Not to mention, Cleveland still had Deshaun Watson on the roster taking up a massive chunk of salary cap space.”
Rees took over playcalling duties after the Browns’ offense struggled with Stefanski calling plays.
Tommy Rees Will Work with a Talented Offense in Atlanta
It is unknown whether Stefanski or Rees will be calling plays in Atlanta. One thing we do know is that these coaches will play a huge role in a loaded offense.
The Atlanta Falcons ranked 14th in the NFL in total offense in 2025. All-Pro Running Back Bijan Robinson played a huge role in this ranking.
Robinson has proven to be the Atlanta Falcons’ best offensive weapon. He had 1,478 yards rushing and 820 yards receiving in 2025. These impressive numbers earned Robinson a pro bowl selection and a First-Team All-Pro selection.
In addition to Robinson, Drake London and Kyle Pitts had impressive seasons in their own right.
Pitts, a 4th overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft, hauled in 88 catches and 928 yards in 2025. Pitts also had an electrifying three-touchdown game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 15 of the 2025 season.
Drake London has displayed the ability of being a WR1 for the Falcons, but injuries were a problem for him in 2025. London caught 68 passes for 919 yards during the season.
In 2024, he recorded his first 1000-yard season as a Falcon recording 1,271 yards during the 2024 season.
Despite having this talent, the quarterback situation for Atlanta remains in question. Michael Penix Jr. suffered a season-ending knee injury in a week 11 game against the Carolina Panthers. Kirk Cousins, who had been backing Penix up for majority of the season, started for the rest of the year.
Regardless of who is at quarterback, it will be up to Tommy Rees and Kevin Stefanski to maximize this talent around them and get Atlanta back to the playoffs for the first time in nine years.
