Jesse Minter is a longtime defensive-minded football coach who was just hired as the Baltimore Ravens’ next head coach after building a strong reputation in the NFL and at the college level.
The 42-year-old arrives in Baltimore with deep ties to the Harbaugh coaching tree, a track record of top defensive results, and a personal story shaped by family, persistence, and years of grinding behind the scenes. Here’s what you need to know.
1. Jesse Minter Is the Ravens’ Fourth Head Coach — and It’s His First Top Job Anywhere
Baltimore hired Minter as the next head coach after firing John Harbaugh earlier this month. That makes Minter the fourth head coach in Ravens franchise history, following Ted Marchibroda, Brian Billick, and Harbaugh.
“This is an organization whose values, culture and tradition of excellence reflect everything I believe about the game of football and how it should be played,” Minter said in a statement released via the team website. “I am truly honored to serve as the head coach of the Baltimore Ravens.”
Minter reportedly signed a five-year deal. The hire marks the first time he has been a head coach at any level.
2. Minter Built His Reputation Under Jim Harbaugh and the Chargers’ Defense Took Off
Minter lands in Baltimore after spending the last four seasons working under Jim Harbaugh — first at Michigan (2022-2023), then with the Los Angeles Chargers (2024-2025). His Chargers defenses ranked top five in multiple categories since the start of 2024, including points allowed per game, total yards allowed, passing yards allowed, interceptions (34), and opponents’ red zone percentage.
Those results helped make him one of the most sought-after candidates in the hiring cycle. Reports said he interviewed with multiple teams, including the Falcons, Browns, Raiders, Dolphins, Steelers, and Titans, before accepting Baltimore’s offer. He also canceled a second interview with Cleveland as the Ravens moved quickly to complete the deal.
3. Jesse Minter Is a Harbaugh Tree Coach With Prior Ravens Experience From 2017 to 2020
Even though Minter’s most recent coaching stops came elsewhere, this is not his first time working for Baltimore. He previously coached with the Ravens from 2017 to 2020 as a defensive assistant, gaining experience within the same organizational culture he is now tasked with leading.
General manager Eric DeCosta emphasized both Minter’s football background and leadership style in announcing the hire.
“Jesse is a strong leader who possesses a brilliant football mind and a spirit that will resonate with our players and fanbase alike,” DeCosta said via the NFL. “Jesse comes from a football family, with success at every level of the sport, and we are confident that he is the right coach to lead the Ravens forward.”
Minter’s hiring also represents a form of continuity for a franchise that leaned heavily into Harbaugh-era stability over the last two decades.
4. Jesse Minter Still Keeps 98 Rejection Letters as Motivation
One of the most talked-about details from Minter’s background is that he still keeps the rejection letters he received early in his coaching journey.
Two decades later, he has held onto exactly 98 letters — each one from a college football program that turned him down in 2006. He told The New York Times he keeps them as a reminder not to take any opportunity for granted.
“Because that’s just how I operate,” Minter said. “It’s just that reminder of the joy that it is, the blessing that it is, the opportunity that you have, not to take it for granted and not to ever feel like you’ve arrived.”
He also explained that he tries to lead without ego, focusing on building an environment where everyone feels valued.
“A lot of coaches have crazy egos, and I think there’s a difference in being confident in yourself and sure of yourself, and then having an ego,” Minter said. “I’ve always tried really, really hard to not have an ego, to really try to build a situation where everybody feels like they have value, where everybody feels like they’re part of the success.”
5. Football Is in Minter’s Family — and He Met His Wife During a College Transfer Week
Minter grew up around coaching because his father, Rick Minter, built a career that has spanned nearly 50 years in college and the NFL. Rick is now a defensive analyst with the Chargers, and he once said of his son, “He’s much more the complete man than I ever was.”
Minter’s upbringing was shaped by both parents. His mother, Ellen McEwen, raised Jesse and his older brother, Josh, after divorcing Rick when Jesse was young. Ellen coached youth sports, worked multiple jobs, and remained deeply involved in athletics — something Jesse credits for shaping his mindset.
“The sacrifices that she always made as a single mom with me and my brother, having to work all the time but yet always giving us everything,” Minter said. “We weren’t rich, but always giving us exactly what we needed.”
Minter met his wife, Rachelle, after transferring to Mount St. Joseph, a Division III college outside Cincinnati. They ended up in the same orientation group, kept running into each other throughout the week, and were dating by the end of it.
“Serendipity,” Rachelle said.
They have been together ever since — a personal constant through a career built on patience, work, and one opportunity at a time.
