The Baltimore Ravens battled valiantly on Sunday Night Football against the Detroit Lions, but they ultimately could not do enough to pick up their second win of the season, suffering a 38-30 defeat when all was said and done. After the game, star cornerback Marlon Humphrey offered a blunt assessment of the Ravens’ defense.

After allowing 41 points in their season-opener against the Buffalo Bills, the Ravens responded by shutting down the lowly Cleveland Browns offense in Week 2, limiting them to just 17 points. However, they couldn’t keep things going against the Lions, and it led to Humphrey making a brutal admission regarding Baltimore’s defense.

Marlon Humphrey Doesn’t Hold Back on Ravens’ Defense

Before completely bashing the Ravens‘ defense, it is worth noting that the Bills and Lions feature two of the most high-powered offenses in the league. Considering how Buffalo has scored at least 30 points in all three of their games, while Detroit dropped 51 on the Chicago Bears in Week 2, it’s safe to say that Baltimore’s defense has been through the ringer to begin the season.

Still, the Ravens offense has played well enough for the team to have won all three of their games. The defense’s inability to get off the field has been a major issue, and they are going to have to improve if they intend to emerge as the Super Bowl contender many folks expected they would be entering the season.

Baltimore has gotten torched on the ground in each of their three games, and it cannot end its opponents’ drives by getting stops on third down. After struggling to lock up star Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, who had seven catches for 77 yards and a touchdown against the Ravens, Humphrey hit the team’s defense with a harsh truth.

“We’re just not very good,” Humphrey bluntly admitted after the game. The biggest thing on playing on the Ravens defense is the organization, the fans, they’ve seen greatness, so being bad, it’s just not the standard … I do know we got guys that want to compete, that want to get the job done. I feel like we are close, but we gotta just all come together.”

Ravens Have Another Tough Matchup on Their Hands in Week 4

The good news for Baltimore is that they won’t face Buffalo or Detroit every week, but if they intend on winning a title this year, they are likely going to have to take down teams like them with similarly talented offenses in order to get there. Getting to the playoffs is the first step, though, and the Ravens now have a 1-2 hole they have to dig themselves out of.

Things aren’t going to get any easier for Baltimore, though, as they have another tough matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs on their hands in Week 4. The Chiefs‘ offense hasn’t been particularly effective this year, but they still have managed to find a way to remain competitive in each of their first four games. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:25 p.m. ET on Sunday, and with K.C. also featuring a 1-2 record, things will be even worse for one of these teams once this game is over.
