When the Baltimore Ravens hired Jesse Minter, they believed they had found the right coach. A former Ravens defensive lineman agrees, complimenting the move. Chris Canty played 11 seasons in the NFL, including his last three in Baltimore. He won a Super Bowl as a starting defensive lineman under John Harbaugh. Canty praised team management for the hire, citing a specific example.
“They don’t need a ‘leader of men’ type coach. They have the infrastructure within that organization … missed out on Mike Macdonald as their head coach, and this was the next best thing. … I love it. I think this is a home run hire for the Baltimore Ravens.”
Ravens Earned Praise for the Hiring of Jesse Minter
When the franchise fired John Harbaugh on January 6, owner Steve Bisciotti wanted a head coach to educate, which became the most important part of the search. In a statement released on January 22 regarding the Minter hiring, Bisciotti details what he saw in the 42-year-old coach:
“He clearly understands the values, high expectations, and history of the Ravens, and he has a great vision for the future. Jesse’s football acumen is outstanding, and that’s been proven by the impact he’s made throughout his entire coaching career. He is also a leader who will authentically connect with our players and inspire them to championship levels.”

Technique and Teaching Are Minter’s Most Glaring Traits
Minter, since taking over as the defensive coordinator at the University of Michigan, has held the role. A football coordinator can fall into a couple of categories. First, the ones that inspire their team to play better. They will use speeches to motivate.
At the same time, many are not what anyone would consider teachers who know the game from an Xs-and-Os perspective. In contrast, the tactician can roll out a meticulous, scheme-specific plan that is malleable and adaptable to various teams.
One of the prime examples of Minter’s coaching ability centers on pass-rusher Odafe Oweh. Through his first five games, the former 2021 first-round pick didn’t tally a sack last season. Baltimore shipped Oweh to Los Angeles for safety Alohi Gilman and a 2026 fifth-round pick. From there, you saw a difference in the edge rusher.
As a Charger, he tallied 7.5 sacks, 13 quarterback hits, and eight tackles for loss. Oweh is an unrestricted free agent, and the new coach could signal a return to the team. Also, veteran Khalil Mack, for what many would consider a low-cost, short-term agreement that could give the Ravens a situational pass rusher familiar with Minter’s scheme.

Minter’s Approach to Teaching Defense Could Spark Improvement
Minter could attempt to bring the same approach eastward, trying to change Mike Green’s game. Before the coach’s arrival, the 2025 second-round pick claimed 3.5 sacks and 14 quarterback hits. While Oweh is a better athlete from a measurable scale, Green features a mid-snap explosion that accelerates him towards the quarterback. Plus, Green can move laterally, as Oweh struggles to retain form as he begins to turn.

One player Minter may not need to overhaul is linebacker Roquan Smith. Smith, who turns 29 during the spring, gives the Ravens a sideline-to-sideline linebacker who excels in run-stopping, coverage, and the occasional blitzing.
The Ravens solved arguably the toughest task on their offseason to-do list. Now, free agency and the draft await. How will Minter influence those personnel decisions?
