We tend to think the ultra-rich — a group which includes every single NFL owner — have zero ways to relate to the common man or woman.
When Baltimore Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti was in the middle of an end-of-the-year press conference on Tuesday, January 13, he showed he could still be one of us when he wants to be.
That moment came with Bisciotti’s reaction to being told Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin had just stepped down after 19 seasons and an immediate follow-up question as to if the Ravens might hire Tomlin as their next head coach.
Bisciotti fired Harbaugh on January 6 after 18 seasons.
“Holy (Expletive) … wouldn’t that be awesome?! Only if the John takes the Pittsburgh job,” Bisciotti joked.
There are currently 9 NFL head coach openings, with no teams having made a move to hire as they jockey for the best of the bunch — led by Harbaugh and Tomlin.
Teams Would Have To Pay Big for Tomlin
Tomlin stepping down and the time and manner in which he did it puts the Steelers in a position of power over the next year — a final favor to the franchise he spent 19 season with and never had a losing season in any of them.
If another team decides they absolutely cannot live without Tomlin, they’ll need to make a trade with the Steelers that properly compensates them for losing Tomlin, who is on contract through the end of next season.
It’s not totally unheard of, and recent NFL history tells us it’s worth it to make that move.
In 2002, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers sent the Oakland Raiders their 2002 and 2003 first round picks, 2002 and 2004 second round picks and $8 million in cash in exchange for head coach Jon Gruden, who led Tampa Bay to its first Super Bowl win in franchise history that season.
In 2023, the Denver Broncos traded their 2023 first round pick and 2024 second round pick to the New Orleans Saints in exchange for head coach Sean Payton and a 2024 third round pick.
Payton snapped the Broncos’ 8-year playoff drought in his second season in 2024 and led the Broncos to a 14-3 regular-season record and the AFC’s No. 1 seed in 2025.
Ravens Called Best Available Head Coaching Job
Of the 9 head coaching jobs available right now, the Ravens are the clear-cut No. 1 out of all of them — ironic considering Harbaugh became the No. 1 head coaching candidate for all 8 other teams the moment he was fired.
The reason the Ravens are the No. 1 job is because they literally have a “just add water” formula for a Super Bowl contender in place, led by 2-time NFL MVP quarterback Lamar Jackson and NFL All-Pro running back Derrick Henry on offense.
On defense, there’s NFL All-Pro talents in place with safety Kyle Hamilton and inside linebacker Roquan Smith.
Bisciotti bought a 49 percent interest in the Ravens in 2000 and purchased the additional 51 percent interest to become sole majority owner in 2004 for a total purchase price estimated at $600 million.
In September 2024, CNBC valued the Ravens at approximately $6.6 billion.
“That was an unreal press conference showing by Steve Bisciotti,” NFL reporter Kevin Oestricher wrote on X. “No notes. Just absolutely incredible in every single way.”
