The Buffalo Bills lost an important member of their quarterback room late this season, but could have a chance to get him back for the playoffs.
The Kansas City Chiefs poached No. 3 quarterback Shane Buechele from Buffalo’s practice squad after losing both of their top quarterbacks to injury, allowing him to get his NFL debut in Sunday’s season finale. With their season now over, the Chiefs have cut Buechele loose and paved the way for a potential return to Buffalo.
Chiefs Waive Shane Buechele Hours After Game
Chiefs reporter Nick Jacobs noted on Monday that the Chiefs waived Buechele, just hours after he made his NFL debut in a season-ending loss to the Las Vegas Raiders. Buechele backed up Chris Oladokun to end the season and completed 7-of-14 passes for 88 yards in the team’s loss.
Buechele will now go through waivers. If unclaimed, he will be free to sign with any team, which could pave the way for a return to Buffalo.
The Bills have placed a high value on Buechele, even though he remained on the practice squad during his three seasons in Buffalo. He played an important for Josh Allen, with reporter Nick Sabato of the Niagara Gazette calling him “Allen’s right-hand man.”
Bills quarterbacks coach Ronald Curry noted that Buechele considered leaving the NFL to become a coach, but noted he decided to come back and play a hybrid role and often works with Allen on his mechanics.
“He just has a great bedside manner,” Curry said. “He sees the game easy and he’s coachable. And I think he’s great for Josh, being the caddy in the room. And he’s great for me just to bounce stuff off of him. If he wants to do coaching one day, I’m pretty sure he’ll excel at it.”
