Bills Lose Versatile Defensive Back to Super Bowl Contender

Bills analysts and fans are still reeling after cornerback Cam Lewis nearly cost Buffalo the win against the Dolphins in Week 15.

The Buffalo Bills are losing one of their longest-tenured — and most versatile — defensive backs to an NFC contender.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported that defensive back Cam Lewis agreed to a two-year deal with the Chicago Bears, putting him on a team that just won the NFC North and will harbor Super Bowl aspirations in 2026.

The move could signal a new direction for the Bills, who will be under former defensive back Jim Leonhard as their defensive coordinator after a shakeup on the coaching staff that included the firing of defensive-minded head coach Sean McDermott.

Cam Lewis Leaving Buffalo

As Fowler noted, Lewis had been a fixture in Buffalo and an important part of the defense. He lined up at several positions in the secondary, making him an important reserve who could fill in for several starters when needed.

Lewis will now have the chance to play an important role for the Bears, who are undergoing their own defensive changes.

“Lewis was a versatile piece for Bills over six seasons, playing corner, safety and nickel corner,” Fowler reported. “Adds to Chicago’s secondary, which is losing multiple pieces.”

The Bills had already parted ways with some other longtime members of the secondary, releasing cornerback Dane Jackson and safety Taylor Rapp. The team initially announced they would be releasing nickel corner Taron Johnson, but later said they would be trading him to the Las Vegas Raiders for a late-round pick swap in this year’s NFL draft.

Bills Making Changes to Their Defense

Leonhard said he didn’t anticipate many sweeping changes for Buffalo’s defense, saying many of the players already on the roster could fit well as they adjusted from McDermott’s base 4-3 alignment to Leonhard’s preferred 3-4 alignment.

“It’s going to be a change for them, but we’re excited as a coaching staff to really be able to create something that is best for their skill sets and fits their personalities,” Leonhard said, via the team’s official website.

Many of the team’s personnel moves so far have been more to gain cap space than a shift in defensive philosophy. Lewis seemed to be a fit with Leonhard’s emphasis on versatility among defenders.

“I think there is a level of versatility in there that is exciting to think about,” Leonhard said about Buffalo’s roster. “I am big on flexibility and being able to play to your best players and force offenses to try to find your issues and to have to deal with their own problems, not always being reactive.”

Leonhard added that he wanted the defense to take a more aggressive approach — they had been among the lowest-blitzing teams under McDermott.

“We’re going to be an attacking defense up front and in the back end,” he said. “We’re going to attack the football. The biggest stat in football is turnovers, so we’re going to be aggressive, we’re going to fly around, we’re going to communicate, we’re going to play well together, but we’re going to cause issues for offense, and we’re going to force them to react to us.”
