The Buffalo Bills will see a familiar face on the opposing sideline this week.
The Carolina Panthers responded to an injury to starter Bryce Young in this week’s game by calling on a former Bills quarterback to add some depth. While the Bills are set to face veteran Andy Dalton in a key game, their former signal-caller has the chance to provide some vital intel on Buffalo’s offense.
Panthers Turn to Mike White for Help
The Panthers announced that they signed Mike White, who spent part of last season with the Bills and competed for the backup job this summer. White lost out to veteran Mitch Trubisky in the competition to back up Josh Allen, with the Bills choosing to cut ties with White rather than keep him as the No. 3.
Panthers coach Dave Canales said earlier this week that the team would look for some outside help to add depth after Young was ruled out of Sunday’s game against the Bills. The Panthers already had former third-round pick Hendon Hooker on their practice squad, but now have added a more seasoned quarterback.
Canales said the team would use the extra insurance until Young is ready to return.
“We’re gonna go day to day,” he said. “We’re gonna go day to day on that right now, and just really look at him each day, just test the ankle in different ways to see if we can’t get him back out there on Wednesday in some way, shape or form. So, we’re just gonna take it that way.
“Saw him this morning, talked to him and he’s like, ‘Let’s push this thing, let’s see what we got.’ So we’re gonna take that approach with it and just go from there.”
White has some NFL experience, making seven career starts between the New York Jets and Miami Dolphins. He has completed 61.4% of passes for 2,247 yards with nine touchdowns and 13 interceptions over his career. White last saw NFL action in Buffalo’s season finale, going 3-for-11 for 28 yards in a loss to the New England Patriots.
Bills Face Critical Test
The Bills will be coming off their bye week and looking to end a two-game losing skid. The team struggled on offense during that time, scoring just one second-half touchdown in their loss to the Atlanta Falcons despite several chances to tie the game.
Offensive coordinator Joe Brady faced some criticism for his play calling, including an ill-fated jet sweep to wide receiver Elijah Moore on a critical third-and-one play in the second half.
Bills head coach Sean McDermott said this week that he’s not worried about Brady’s play calling, saying no one on the coaching staff is perfect.
“I’m confident in the people we have in this building, number one” McDermott said, via the Wellsville Sun. “Two is, you know, we can certainly perform at a higher level, and we need to. We need to do our jobs, know our jobs.
“No one’s gonna be perfect. You go through a game, and there’s always calls you want back.
