The NFL landscape has been shaken up this Monday, as teams can now begin negotiating deals with free agents, though they won’t be able to officially sign them until the new league year kicks off on Wednesday.
Several Buffalo Bills players, including quarterback Mitchell Trubisky, guard David Edwards and fullback Reggie Gilliam, have found new teams. However, a former player who left a few years back has now secured a new home as well.
Former Bills Linebacker Tremaine Edmunds is Heading to New York
According to Ian Rapoport from NFL Network, former Bills linebacker Tremaine Edmunds has reached an agreement with the New York Giants on a three-year deal worth $36 million, which includes $23.7 million guaranteed.
“The Giants are signing standout LB Tremaine Edmunds to a 3-year, $36M deal with $23.7M fully guaranteed,” Rapoport wrote Monday on X.
Buffalo drafted Edmunds in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft, and he earned Pro Bowl honors for two consecutive seasons, from 2019 to 2020. In 2023, Edmunds signed a four-year, $72 million contract with the Chicago Bears, but the team parted ways with him during the offseason.
Pro Football Focus ranked Edmunds as the 34th linebacker out of 88 last season, placing him 15th in run defense, 60th in pass rush and 50th in coverage.
PFF also ranked Edmunds as its No. 111 free agent on the open market this offseason.
“Edmunds struggled to meet expectations after signing a four-year, $72 million deal with the Bears, finishing 2025 with a 61.0 PFF overall grade and a 53.0 PFF coverage grade,” PFF wrote on Monday. “While his coverage performance remained inconsistent, he improved significantly against the run, producing a career-best 81.1 PFF run-defense grade. Still only 27, Edmunds has the talent and track record to rebound, but continues to search for consistent year-to-year performance.”
Edmunds Can Help Out The Giants
The Giants made a significant move this offseason by hiring former Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh to lead their team. Harbaugh is no stranger to working with top-tier linebackers, having coached stars like Ray Lewis and Roquan Smith, who anchored his defense over the years.
Edmunds is now joining the ranks of top linebackers that Harbaugh has worked with, and he’s set to face a significant challenge with a team that finished last season with one of the worst records in the NFL.
The Giants need to bolster their defense to stay competitive with the top teams in the NFC East, especially the Dallas Cowboys, Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Commanders. Edmunds has the potential to be a key player that New York can count on moving forward.
It will be interesting to see how the Giants utilize Edmunds. Although he hasn’t been a Pro Bowler in a while, perhaps New York can help him regain some of his Pro Bowl-caliber performance over the next few seasons.
The Bills won’t be seeing the Giants this season, as they will play the NFC North and not the NFC East, so they will only see Edmunds if they meet New York in the Super Bowl.
