The Buffalo Bills are getting assistance from their most valuable player in filling their head-coaching vacancy.
Josh Allen is reportedly sitting in on head-coach interviews with Bills brass like general manager Brandon Beane and owner Terry Pegula.
Allen, of course, is arguably the most valuable player in all of football. He is the reigning AP NFL MVP and was again named as a finalist for the award for 2025 after helping Buffalo go 12-5 and reach the AFC Divisional Round before falling to the Denver Broncos 33-30 in overtime Saturday.
Buffalo is, of course, trying to replace coach Sean McDermott, who was fired Monday after nine years as head coach.
Josh Allen Will Have A Role In Determining The Bills’ Next Head Coach
It seems like more of an NBA thing to have a star player engaged in head-coaching talks. Yet according to Dianna Russini of The Athletic, Allen has been, and will be, involved in every head-coach interview happening — they will all be held in Florida this weekend, starting with Mike McDaniel’s interview Friday.
“They flew to Florida to meet with Mike McDaniel today, Anthony Lynn, Anthony Weaver Saturday and Grant Udinski, Sunday,” Russini posted on X (formerly Twitter). “One constant in every single interview? QB Josh Allen is sitting in for everything.
“Buffalo is making sure their best player, team leader, and face of the franchise is part of the hiring process. Josh Allen will have significant say on the next coach of the Buffalo Bills.”
Allen was, of course, the seventh overall pick of the 2018 NFL Draft by the Bills and has started every game of his professional career. He signed a six-year, $330 million contract last March, which put him tied with fellow QBs Joe Burrow, Trevor Lawrence and Jordan Love as the second-highest-paid players in the league.
Josh Allen Is Likely To Choose An Offensive-Minded Head Coach
The Bills met with former offensive coordinator Brian Daboll in Orchard Park on Thursday, and of Russini’s reported list of interviews, only Weaver has a defensive background. Plus, they reportedly intend to interview former NFL quarterback Philip Rivers for their vacancy Friday.
So between the list of candidates, and Allen’s involvement in the hiring process, it seems likely Buffalo will end up hiring an offensive-minded coach after it fired the defensively driven McDermott.
The Bills, of course, are one of the best offensive teams in the NFL, keyed by Allen who is arguably the best quarterback and most important player in the league. The Bills ranked fourth in the league in both points (28.3) and yards per game (376.3), and their points-per-game mark dropped from 2024 when they ranked second — and Allen won MVP.
The Bills ranked 12th in points-against per game (21.5) in 2025. But they have surrendered at least 27 points in each of their past six season-ending losses with an average of 33.2 points against in those games.
So aligning an offensive mind with Allen seems like padding an already-strong unit. What could be most intriguing is where Buffalo goes with its defensive coordinator role, since that is the group that has kept the Bills from reaching the Super Bowl.
