The Buffalo Bills‘ offseason is only four days old, but a lot has happened in a short amount of time. Less than 48 hours after they crashed out of the playoffs, head coach Sean McDermott was fired in a surprising move, meaning Buffalo will have to begin its offseason looking for a new leader. On Wednesday, owner Terry Pegula and general manager Brandon Beane met with the media, and it’s safe to say the two provided some explosive answers.
Pegula was not shy in making his opinions known regarding several important subjects, including the result of the Bills’ loss to the Broncos or why the team decided to fire McDermott. In a more subdued moment, though, Pegula opted to explain why he has rarely made himself available to the media over the past several years.
Terry Pegula Pulls Back the Curtain on Recent Media Silence
Back in 2014, Pegula bought the Bills’ franchise after it was placed for sale in the wake of the death of their founder, Ralph Wilson. It was the biggest purchase for Pegula in a slate of moves that also saw him purchase the Buffalo Sabres, in addition to several other hockey and lacrosse teams in the local Buffalo area.
Pegula has been hard at work helping the Bills get a new stadium, but he’s rarely spoken to the media as the project has unfolded. It’s been a bit of a surprise to folks, given the team’s success, but Pegula does have several ventures on his hands, and his daughter, Jessica Pegula, is one of the top women’s tennis players in the world.
In the wake of McDermott’s firing, though, Pegula showed face publicly to address the situation and the Bills’ future. Among the questions he faced, though, was why he had not spoken to the media much in recent years. According to the man himself, several internal family issues have taken up the majority of Pegula’s time. However, he believes he will be more accessible to the media moving forward.
“I think that’s a possibility in the future,” Pegula said of meeting with the media more frequently. “I can’t even go watch my daughter play tennis. She’s got to No. 3 in the world, and I’ve been to like two of her matches in the last four years. We have issues in the family, but I can see me being more available in the future.”

Pegula made quite a mark with his return to the public eye on Wednesday, and his comments on the Bills will surely add some intrigue to the team’s upcoming head coach search. The decision to move on from McDermott has been met with mixed reviews, and if Buffalo doesn’t nail this hire, chances are Pegula will face quite a bit of backlash.
The Bills have begun identifying candidates they would like to discuss their head coach opening with, but this process is still in the early stages. Buffalo has suddenly set the stage for a very important offseason of work, and all eyes will be on the team to see who its next head coach will be as it attempts to maximize the prime of superstar quarterback Josh Allen’s career.
