When Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase isn’t spitting on opponents during games then getting caught lying about it, he can sometimes be found spitting insults about players like Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams into various microphones.

One such incident occurred Thursday, February 5 and involved a microphone belonging to “The Pat McAfee Show,” which airs on ESPN. In this particular case, the insult was implied, as Chase either didn’t know Williams’ name, or pretended not to know it.

“I don’t know what the [expletive] his first name is,” Chase said to fellow Bengals WR Tee Higgins on set after referring to Williams as ‘Caleb Daniels‘ rather than Caleb Williams. “What’s the QB for the Bears?”

The hosts of the show, including McAfee, pointed out that Chase had combined Williams’ and Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels‘ first and last names, respectively.

The two quarterbacks went Nos. 1 and 2 in the 2024 NFL draft, with Daniels winning Offensive Rookie of the Year honors that season and Williams leading the Bears to an NFC North Division title and the second round of the playoffs this year.

Cincinnati went 9-8 and 6-11 during the last two regular seasons, respectively, finishing third in the AFC North Division and missing the playoffs both years.

One of the Bengals’ 11 losses in 2025 came at the hands of Williams and the Bears via a late-game comeback that put Chicago over the top, which was a theme for the team and its quarterback pretty much all season (and postseason) long.

Williams used a graphic from that game, including Chase speaking on the sidelines during its final moments, to help jog the wideout’s memory as to just who exactly Williams is.

Chicago held a 14-point lead with less than two minutes and 30 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter in Week 9 in Cincinnati. But the Bengals’ offense roared back to grab a 42-41 lead over Chicago with just 50 seconds to play.

“One [expletive] stop,” the television crew recorded Chase saying on the sideline.

But the Bengals defense wasn’t able to come up with it.

Williams led the Bears on a four-play drive spanning 72 yards, capping it with a 58-yard touchdown pass to rookie tight end Colston Loveland. Chicago won by five points and moved to 5-3 on the season.

The victory was the first of a five-game win streak and a stretch of seven victories in eight games that put the Bears into the NFC playoffs as the No. 2 seed.

Williams finished the season as both a quarterback who struggled with inconsistency (58.1 percent completion rate) and one whose physical ceiling could eventually become among the highest in the history of the sport (see his fourth-down touchdown pass to Cole Kmet against the Los Angeles Rams in the Divisional Round that sent the game to overtime).

Despite Williams’ struggles, he broke the Bears’ all-time record for single-season passing yards (3,942) and threw 27 TDs against seven INTs. The 24-year-old QB also rushed the football for 388 yards and three scores.

Williams has a chance to make a significant third-season leap in his second campaign under head coach Ben Johnson in 2026, which could catapult the Bears to the top of the NFC assuming good injury luck and significant improvement to the defensive roster this offseason.

In any case, Chase probably hasn’t heard Williams’ name for the last time, so he’d do well to remember it.
