Ahead of their Week 4 matchup with the Las Vegas Raiders, the Chicago Bears got some good and bad news on the injury front.

Bears starting RB D’Andre Swift, a former second-round pick by the Lions out of Georgia, hasn’t missed time yet this season, but there were concerns during the week that he may not suit up for Chicago.

Those fears seem to be put to rest, however, as Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports that Swift is expected to play on Sunday despite being listed as questionable with a hip injury.

On the season, Swift has 149 rushing yards and a touchdown, to go with 9 receptions for 63 yards. Swift has been sharing time in the backfield with rookie Kyle Monangai while dealing with the injury. Monangai had 6 carries for 16 yards and 1 catch for 4 yards in the Bears‘ win over the Cowboys last week.

First Round Pick Not Expected to Suit Up; Roster Move Made to Fill Gap

Rookie TE Colston Loveland is not expected to play, per Rapoport. The first-round pick out of Michigan is also dealing with a hip injury.

“He’ll work out, but chances are Loveland won’t go,” Rapoport posted on X. While Loveland is likely to be sidelined against the Raiders, Bears head coach Ben Johnson is hopeful the injury won’t be a long term problem.

Johnson told reporters about the injury, “doesn’t seem like anything super serious.”

Loveland has had a slow start to his career with the Bears, catching 3 passes for 43 yards during the first three weeks of the season. He had 1 catch for 31 yards against the Cowboys.

The Bears will have Cole Kmet and Durham Smythe at tight end against Las Vegas on Sunday. Tight end Stephen Carlson was also elevated to the active roster because of Loveland’s injury.

Carlson, who originally signed with the Browns as an undrafted free agent out of Princeton in 2019, has been on the Bears practice squad off and on since 2023. He has 6 career catches for 62 yards and a touchdown, all with the Browns. He was last active in 2023.

The Chicago Bears Offense Woke Up Against the Cowboys Last Week

The Cowboys have arguably the worst defense in the NFL through three weeks, ranking near the bottom of the league in both points and yards allowed per game. Even average offenses are supposed to look good against Dallas, but even so, it was good to see the Bears producing on offense against anyone.

Second-year QB Caleb Williams had his best game as a pro last week, throwing for 298 yards and four touchdowns. He looked calm and in control all afternoon, executing the offense cleanly and playing mistake-free football. After a rough rookie season for the former No. 1 overall pick out of USC, he’s already looking better in Year 2.

New Chicago head coach Ben Johnson was brought over from the Lions this offseason to work with Williams. Johnson is considered one of the top offensive minds in the sport and worked wonders in Detroit with their offense for years. He was a highly-coveted head coaching candidate for three straight cycles, turning down several opportunities before eventually leaving to work with Williams in Chicago.

It’s early, but the offense already looks smoother and Williams is more confident and playing better. That’s a win for the Bears.

The Chicago Bears Have a Critical Stretch Upcoming

The Bears play the Raiders in Las Vegas this week. After that, they face the Commanders, Saints, Ravens, Bengals, and Giants. Chicago are the underdogs on the road in Las Vegas this week by a point and a half, which means it’s essentially a pick ’em on a neutral field.

Outside of the games against Washington and Baltimore, the Bears will either be favored or slight underdogs in every game. The schedule toughens after that, with games against the Vikings, Steelers, Eagles, Packers, Browns, Packers, 49ers, and Lions to close the year. If the Bears want to build some momentum, now’s the time. And it starts today against the Raiders in a very winnable game.
