Kevin Byard III Isn’t Sugarcoating the Bears’ Playoff Reality

The Chicago Bears don’t have the luxury of looking ahead, and Kevin Byard III made that reality clear this week.

While Chicago still sits at nine wins, the NFC math has shifted (and fast). The loss to the Packers dropped the Bears from the #1 seed in the conference to the final playoff spot (#7). Another loss in this loaded NFC would most likely push them out entirely. That’s the reality surrounding Sunday’s matchup against Cleveland.

Byard’s message was simple: the Bears are good, but being good won’t be enough.

Why the Playoff Margin Is Gone

Kevin Byard III didn’t hesitate when asked about the playoff race and what the math looks like in the NFC.

“With the amount of good, really talented teams in the NFC, you know, 10 wins I don’t think is going to get it done,” Byard said. “I think last year Seattle had 10 wins and didn’t get in. I think it’s going to be the same thing this year.”

From his perspective, the bar is clear.

“It’s going to take 11 games to get in, in my opinion,” Byard said. “So that’s just the reality of the situation.”

That reality shapes everything about how the Bears approach the final stretch. Chicago has already reached nine wins, but standing pat won’t cut it, not in this conference, not this year.

“Having nine wins is cool, but it’s not going to get us in the playoffs,” Byard said. “We’re going to have to get at least two wins… probably three or four to win a division.”

Why Cleveland Is a Real Problem Anyway

On paper, this is a favorable matchup for the Chicago Bears. But in reality, it pokes directly at several of the Bears’ vulnerabilities they’ve recently shown.

Chicago’s offense has made a habit of starting games slow and finishing them strong. But that formula becomes far riskier in frigid conditions, where possessions are limited and explosive plays are harder to come by.

Cleveland also brings the kind of defensive front that can disrupt early rhythm led by Myles Garrett, who is on pace to break the single season sack record of 22.5 (he’s already at 20).

Myles Garrett’s presence alone changes protections and play calling, especially for a Bears offensive line still solidifying on the left side with rookie Ozzy Trapilo. Falling behind early against that pass rush is absolutely not a place Chicago wants to live.

Kevin Byard III didn’t call this a must win game… He didn’t need to.

Everyone knows that the Bears have no margin for error anymore. The standings in this loaded NFC are tight, the weather conditions are unforgiving, and the remaining schedule won’t get any easier (vs Browns, vs Packers, at 49ers, vs Lions).

This is the part of the season where playoff teams separate themselves from good teams by handling games they’re supposed to win, especially at home.

The Chicago Bears need wins. And they need to start stacking them now.
