The Chicago Bears made one of the biggest moves of the early NFL offseason when they traded wide receiver DJ Moore to the Buffalo Bills.

While the deal created cap flexibility and sparked speculation about what other moves Chicago could make, it also has quietly opened the door for a major breakout from second-year wide receiver Luther Burden III.

Several analysts have already begun pointing to Burden as one of the biggest beneficiaries of the trade. NFL analyst Matt Bowen highlighted Burden’s potential when discussing young offensive players poised for a leap in 2026.

“Luther Burden III had a really solid rookie season,” Bowen wrote. “He finished with 652 receiving yards and his 2.48 yards per route run ranked seventh among wide receivers. Burden has the three-level ability to produce big plays in the Bears offense.”

Other league observers believe Burden’s ceiling could be even higher now that Moore is gone. NFL Network’s Michael F. Florio suggested the young receiver may now be positioned to emerge as Chicago’s primary option in the passing game.

“With DJ Moore traded to Buffalo, Luther Burden could be in line to become the Bears’ No. 1 receiver,” Florio wrote while discussing the impact of the deal.

That type of opportunity rarely opens this quickly for a young receiver. But the circumstances around Chicago’s roster make Burden one of the most obvious candidates in the league to see his role expand dramatically in 2026.

Bears Rookie’s Efficiency Hinting at Bigger Production

Burden quietly delivered one of the more efficient rookie seasons among young wide receivers in 2025. The second-round pick finished with 47 receptions for 652 yards despite sitting behind Moore and Rome Odunze.

The advanced metrics behind those numbers are what have analysts most intrigued. Bowen’s note that Burden ranked seventh in yards per route run highlights just how productive he was on a per play basis.

Efficiency like that often signals a player ready for a bigger workload. With Moore no longer occupying the top receiver role, those additional targets could now shift toward Burden.

His skill set also fits the type of explosive playmaking Chicago wants to build around quarterback Caleb Williams. Burden has the ability to create separation at multiple levels of the field and generate yards after the catch. Those traits helped make him one of the most dynamic receivers in the 2025 draft class.

Burden’s Opportunity to Emerge as Bears WR1

The Bears’ passing attack is expected to revolve around young talent moving forward. Odunze remains a major piece of the offense, and tight end Colston Loveland could take a big step forward as well.

Still, the DJ Moore trade leaves a significant share of targets available. That is why several observers believe Burden could be the player who benefits most.

Florio pointed out that the roster shift could allow Burden to transition from promising young weapon to a true featured receiver. If that happens, Chicago may quickly discover it already had Moore’s successor waiting on the roster.

Chicago’s confidence in Luther Burden developing into a larger offensive weapon likely helped give the organization comfort in moving on from DJ Moore and reshaping both the wide receiver room and its salary cap structure.

With a much larger role likely on the way, the Bears may soon find out just how high Burden’s ceiling truly is.
