The Chicago Bears enjoyed one of the top breakout campaigns across the NFL in 2025, but as is always the case, when you find success in the league, every other team will look to replicate that success. For the Bears, that saw them lose their offensive coordinator, Declan Doyle, to the Baltimore Ravens, meaning that head coach Ben Johnson had to begin searching for a new replacement.

Doyle’s decision to leave Chicago for a lateral move (he’s working as Baltimore’s offensive coordinator) was a bit of a surprise. His loss, though, is a major blow for Johnson and the Bears, but it didn’t take him long to find a replacement, as the first-year head coach opted to promote one of the members of his staff to fill Doyle’s shoes.

Ben Johnson Promotes Press Taylor to Bears’ Offensive Coordinator

After enjoying a meteoric rise as the Detroit Lions‘ offensive coordinator, Johnson landed the Bears’ head coach gig last offseason, and he quickly changed the team’s fortunes. With second-year quarterback Caleb Williams leading the charge, Chicago won the NFC North and nearly advanced to the NFC Championship Game, only to suffer a crushing loss to the Los Angeles Rams in their divisional round matchup.

There were a lot of reasons for the team’s success, but it was their passing attack that struck the most fear in opponents. The guy leading that facet of the offense was Press Taylor, who previously spent three years as the Jacksonville Jaguars‘ offensive coordinator. Working just as the passing game coordinator with Chicago, Taylor helped create gameplans that led to easy throws for Williams after he struggled through a rocky rookie campaign.

Again, losing Doyle wasn’t ideal, but Johnson quickly realized that he already had an in-house replacement for him on his staff. That would be Taylor, who was revealed to be earning a promotion to offensive coordinator on Johnson’s staff now that Doyle has latched on with the Ravens for the 2026 season.

“The Bears are promoting passing game coordinator Press Taylor to offensive coordinator, giving coach Ben Johnson a new top lieutenant, per The Insiders,” Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported in a post on X. “Taylor was an OC with the #Jaguars until 2024 before working with Johnson. With Declan Doyle in Baltimore, Taylor is the OC.”

Taylor quickly proved he’s still a skilled offensive mind in his first year with the Bears, even though his stint with the Jags didn’t exactly come to a great end. Now, he will be given full control of the offense, and if his initial season with the team is anything to go by, the unit is in good hands moving forward.

While Johnson’s coaching staff is largely set, there’s still a lot of work for Chicago to do this offseason. The roster, while in decent shape, still needs upgrades at several important spots. If the Bears push all the right buttons over the next few months, though, they could prove that their sudden turnaround in 2025 was not a fluke when they eventually return to action.
