Deshaun Watson’s wife offered a simple show of support before the Cleveland Browns quarterback endured a brutal homecoming.
“Here for 4,” Jilly Anais Watson wrote on Instagram alongside a series of photos before Cleveland’s 31-7 preseason loss to the Buffalo Bills on Saturday.
Anais Watson was inside Huntington Bank Field as her husband was loudly booed throughout his first home appearance since tearing his Achilles in October 2024.
She shared the post to her stories again after the game, writing, “What my caption says.”
During a tense postgame press conference, Deshaun Watson said his wife has been a source of stability through some of the darkest moments of his career.
“I lean on my mom, and ultimately, I lean on my wife. That’s my biggest person of peace that I have,” Watson said. “You might catch me during the games, in certain situations, looking up to her in the suite, just making sure that as long as she’s there. She’s been there the whole time, through my situations the last five years. So she’s the best person in the world that I can lean on for support.”
Watson gave the crowd little reason to change its tone with his play. He replaced Shedeur Sanders in the second half and completed 5 of 12 passes for 36 yards with one interception. He played just over a quarter.

“I don’t know” became a recurring answer during Watson’s now-viral postgame availability. Watson admitted he was unsure how he would handle another season of intense scrutiny from his own fanbase.
“I thought being away for two years and working myself back from two Achilles injuries and putting the time in, being around the facility, being around the city, doing charity work in the city, supporting the Cleveland Browns, hanging out with fans whenever I do see them, being honest, being the type of person I know I am, and the character would help. I guess it hasn’t,” Watson said. “So, that’s why I say it’s more personal.”
Watson said the reaction had moved beyond football in his eyes. He pointed to fans cheering when he suffered his Achilles injury in 2024 and described their treatment of him as personal and disrespectful.
The admission creates another complication for the Browns. Watson would face the same questions and negativity every week if named the starter, with each mistake likely to magnify the divide between him and the fanbase.

The Browns cannot make the Watson problem disappear by simply releasing him. His fully guaranteed contract has kept him tied to Cleveland through this season, regardless of whether he wins the starting job.
Watson entered Saturday viewed as the frontrunner after starting the preseason opener against the Chicago Bears. He completed 11 of 15 passes for 126 yards in that outing and received strong praise from coach Todd Monken.
However, the combination of Watson’s poor performance against Buffalo and his postgame comments could change the direction of the competition. Naming Watson the starter now would be a borderline impossible sell.
Monken declined to name a starter immediately after the loss. He said he needed to review the film and speak with his staff before reaching a conclusion.
“Well, at some point, I’m gonna have to decide, right?” Monken said. “I’m not gonna paint myself into a corner. Optimally, you’d liked to have given a player all of the reps, and you know who the one is. We’ve done it as best we could as a staff, trying to work through this.”
The Browns close the preseason against the New England Patriots on Thursday. Monken would prefer to settle the competition before then, allowing the winner to take control of the offense ahead of Cleveland’s regular-season opener.
