The Cleveland Browns finally filled their head coaching vacancy, hiring Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken.
The Browns were down to Monken, Los Angeles Rams pass game coordinator Nate Scheelhaase, and current defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz. Many in the building were pulling for Schwartz to be named the head coach, and it appears Garrett was one of them.
After the hiring of Monken – and Schwartz reportedly telling people in the building he’s leaving the team – Garrett posted a cryptic message on Instagram.
The post shows a worker with their head down, looking upset/frustrated, which is what Garrett could be feeling after the Browns opted not to hire Schwartz.
Garrett was a big fan of Schwartz, as after the season, he praised the defensive coordinator.
The star pass rusher finished the year with a record-breaking 23 sacks, along with 60 tackles and 3 forced fumbles.
Garrett signed a four-year, $160,000,000 contract with the Browns last offseason.
Garrett ‘Loved’ Playing for Schwartz
The Browns opting not to hire Schwartz as their head coach is a bit of a surprise, as many in the building did like playing for him.
Just before the season ended, Garrett praised Schwartz and said he loved playing for him.
“I mean I like Jim; I like the coaches that we have,” Garrett said. “So, I don’t know what’s going to be in the future. Would I like to play under Jim? Would I like to keep the team and for us to improve? Absolutely.
“But these are things that are handled by people who sign my checks so they make bigger decisions than I can account for. So I’m going allow them to do what they do – give my opinions if they ask for it. And I got to rock with whoever they have here. But I love Jim, and I love playing for him.”
Although Garrett said he loved playing for Schwartz, he said he wasn’t sure what a team would look like with him as the head coach. But, he did make it clear guys like playing for him.
“I can’t see into the future, I don’t know what it’d be like,” Garrett said. “I know he’s regimented and very efficient. That’s how he runs it on defense, so those two things would hold true. But how it would come out to results on the field is only determined by us. And sometimes you can’t control injuries and whatnot.”
It’s clear that Garrett and Schwartz had a good relationship. The star pass rusher isn’t pleased with the team’s decision to hire Monken as the head coach.
Schwartz Informs Browns He’s Leaving
After Cleveland informed Schwartz he wouldn’t be the team’s next head coach, it was reported that he said he would be leaving the organization.
Schwartz felt like he did everything possible to be the head coach, and he wasn’t happy with the decision, according to Tom Pelissero.
“After the Browns informed DC Jim Schwartz this morning they were passing him over to hire Todd Monken as head coach, Schwartz was visibly upset, said goodbyes in the building and told other coaches he’s not coming back, sources tell The Insiders. Schwartz is under contract and Cleveland wants to retain him. But his future is now unclear,” Pelissero wrote on X.
If Schwartz does leave the Browns, he will be highly sought after by the league as a defensive coordinator.
